DescriptionRoll call! Very grateful to be able to display this page, which not only contains a killer shot of Cyclops, but basically the whole ‘new student’ lineup of the New Xavier School during the Bendis / Bachalo era: the Cuckoos, Fabio Medina (Goldballs), Christopher Muse (Triage), Benjamin Deeds, David Bond (Hijack), Eva Bell (Tempus)… The gang’s all here! For this ‘Uncanny X’ relaunch, Chris came up with a new costume template / redesign for the main characters. Magik’s new look was definitive and remains the new standard for the character, but after taking some time to grow on me, I think Cyclops’s look really fit him, too, reflecting both the external and internal struggles the character would go through in the run. Not only did he adopt the role of the maverick face of his ‘New Mutant Revolution’, but he also wrestled with Xavier’s death, his role in that, and how he - and everyone else - saw himself following those events. Lots of inner turmoil, scars, and a literal cross (albeit one tipped on its side) for Mr. Summers to bear: Cyclops’s (truly) Scarlet Letter. A really fun showcase page with some terrific inks by Al Vey. K Gearon, you complete me!! Thanks, amigo. Social/Sharing |

I've addmittedly never even heard of any of these characters, and I don't see Magik anywhere, but I dig the Cyclops image. I have to to ask though, how he does he see without a visor and a big X stitched into the mask?

Much like in A Silent Voice / Koe no katachi (on Netflix), the X on Cyclops' head has a meaning greater for him and the mutant cause. He must resolve his inner and the mutant struggle before that brand or scarlet letter can be taken off.

After decades of collaboration, we've gotten so used to seeing only Townsend inks on Bachalo pencils. Not since the early days of Generation X have I ever seen anyone else ink Chris. This is actually the first time I've seen anyone other than Tim ink him, which is why the contrast is so striking and interesting to me. It's almost like seeing someone other than Scott ink Jim. Anyway, this is what makes art so much fun to collect and study. Cool page, congrats buddy!

Thanks, Eric, and you absolutely hit the nail on the head as far as one of the absolute joys of this hobby; namely seeing the sometimes unexpected combination of artists that produce a result different from what we're used to seeing from them - a Resse's peanut butter cup of artistic goodness. Chris had a bunch of different inkers on him through his 'Doctor Strange' run as well (John Livesay, Al Vey, Jamie Mendoza, among others) and it's always fascinating to see those originals. Thank you, Eric, and everyone, for commenting!

I can almost hear the muttering and talking from the background. What a cool layout concept for a new design reveal. I love the floated Cyke over his black out inks in the first panel and all those reactions. It's a neat choice to have most of the background characters out of costume, too. And those Vey inks over Bachalo pencils are very nice (if discordant to see, as Eric pointed out). Nice one via Kahlil, Jason. Congrats!

Thanks, J H! You're right - floating the main Cyke image over the rest of the page highlights it (especially over the black in panel 1) and allows for splashy imagery lodged in among the solid storytelling (like something Ed McGuinness - another master of the technique - might attempt). A great storytelling technique, allowing for a sort of visual 'discord' as Cyclops's holographic self talks on over the conversation happening between all the students in the other panels, Princess Leia-like. :) Thanks again, J H (and all)!

The Bachalo love continues unabated. The lines bold and true. The pose is fierce. The pouches proud. The brunette is cute. Cyclops is ready to be a badazz.

It's like a checklist, right? Pose and composition - check. Brunette - check. Pouches - CHECK!! Thanks always, Steve.

Great page.
For many, the money shot will be the Cyclops image whose costume was indeed really striking and for me the testimony of his more extreme approach to the mutant cause under Bendis. Though I also wondered if the costume was not better suited to Daredevil for the obvious vision problems it would have caused. But hey, it's comics, right?
However, the best aspect of the page for me is all the kids and the "at school feeling" it generates.

Great face forward shot of Cyke, and the inks are splended indeed, my friend. Wait...why did I sell this to you again?! ;) Standout Bachalo page and it definitely is a sight in person. Congrats, Jason!

HA! Although I'm not quite sure why you chose to part with it, I am sincerely grateful you allowed me to look after it, sir. And as cool as it was to see it, the personal delivery just put the whole thing over the top. :) Thanks again, K (and everyone).

Bachalo loves to break the panels, and this is a great example. Killer Cyclops composition. Congrats.

Wow! Killer page by Chris Bachalo and Al Vey. I love the juxtaposition of the massive Cyclops image over the various images of the students reacting to what he's saying. Their wonder and worry and, yes, fear is apparent on their faces. It's like what it must have been in classrooms everywhere on 9/11. Chris does an excellent job of conveying the varying emotions on the student's faces. And Al's inks are superb here, letting us understand the momumental challenges facing the student body. This is a memorable moment in their lives that Chris and Al help us witness. Incredible pick-up, congrats!
