DescriptionMy first published Terry Dodson piece! And although he’s obviously associated more closely with the X-Folks, I’m really thrilled to have a fun page from a super-team that is a bit closer to my heart (that super-team being Terry and Rachel Dodson, of course). In this story, Brian Bendis wraps up his ‘Avengers’ run with a focus on the classic ‘Avengers’ #4 lineup as Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and Giant Man go sub-atomic to rescue the Wasp. That top panel is pretty crazy and beautifully well-balanced, with all five of our heroes exploding into action, but the thing I love most about the page is the opportunity to see up-close the incredible inking chops of Rachel Dodson. It’s a pretty remarkable study and a testament to how much technique and work goes into setting down one of the cleanest, smoothest, most “effortless” cartoon lines in the business, in Terry’s work. Lots of visual texture here, with all sorts of devices employed to convey the action and storytelling including a thin, white paint outline at the bottom of Cap's shield in panel 1 (to more clearly demarcate it from the background explosions and characters), and using both paint and thin lines in the explosions to make them really pop. Giant-Man's growth effect in panel 1 is achieved through multiple faint character outlines (which is a technique often used), but also supplemented by lightly inked (and intentionally smudged) black/grey lines to simulate hurried, slightly out-of-focus motion. And the lines! There are just tons and tons of little lines all over the place - action, energy, floor tiling, action, buildings, action, Action, ACTION!!! Fun battle storytelling in the other panels, too, with the shot of the enormous shadow of Giant-Man being the, um, standout. Thank you, Michael at More Great Art! Social/Sharing |

Jason, you've pointed out literally everything there is to say about this piece and have left me with nothing to say that you haven't already said! But I will add that my favourite part if the Giant-Man growth effect in panel 1. I've always loved the different ways that artists create the motion effects of running, growing and shrinking. Really strong page!

Cue the Alan Silvestri theme! It brings the wonder onto the page for heroes to inspire once more.

A lot going on here, but nothing the Avengers can't handle! Dig how each character is fleshed out in detail without the page being too busy at the same time. Very fluid, cinematic.

Another fun Bendis page. He draws so well ;)
HA! You're killing me, Fred! One of his greatest strengths is his ability to 'draw' from the awesome pool of talent he gets to collaborate with, for sure (and, yeah - guilty as charged - I do really get a huge kick out of looking for those 'intersections'... :) ). Thanks as always, Fred (and all)!

The action tricks are top notch, too. Action lines, energetic explosions, and that glinting shield flying off the page. Such great choices. And I love the representation of giant man shrinking. Very Kirby-esque right there, imo. Those regular energy lines in the explosion and on giant man are really a great technique. I can see what you mean with her masterful inking. Gorgeous all around. Microscopic congrats! ;)

Hey congrats, Jason! Loving that top panel splash. Screams OG Avengers. All modern Dodson but at the same time takes you back to '60s Avengers! Gotta love when a piece can do that. Congrats, man!

Totally badass Avengers page from Terry and Rachel Dodson. This page has it all, with the Avengers on the attack from the get-go. That top panel features Thor flying into battle, Cap's shield spionning right at us, Giantman growing and Iron Man deflecting bullets shot at him! What more could any Avengers junkie ask for?
