Description

Well, this is a very special group of items to add to my collection. Many longtime collectors know my pal Charlie Roberts. Charlie's grandfather, Charles H. Smith, was a lieutenant colonel serving stateside in New York during WWI. In October 1918 he received a letter from George McManus, asking for a favor to allow his brother Charlie to serve stateside in New York, as the McManus' mother was all alone. Lt. Col. Smith agreed to make these arrangements and McManus wrote him again eight days letter, extending his hearty thanks, with an offer of sending Bringing up Father originals to hang around the camp! One of the letters is illustrated by McManus, along with both envelopes.

Charlie McManus would later become a minor cartoonist himself, riding the coattails of his famous brother.

These items have been in Charlie's family for over 100 years, and I'm honored to now be their caretaker.

This is really cool. I had a bit of trouble reading some of his script, but it is a really great snapshot it time. Congrats and keep it safe!
