DescriptionA super fun (& fresh) take on Batgirl by my fav' modern artist, Jason Pearson, likely an elaborate convention sketch from 1994.So this would have been drawn after all his early jobs (LSH & several fill-ins) at DC and between the star revealing Uncanny X-Men annual 17 and Savage Dragon Blood and Guts mini series, around the time he drew several (little) things at Image. Despite being a new talent in the industry he was already quite influential to many of his contemporary fellow artists (Ben Herrera and Mike Avon Oeming come to mind) and would continue to be (Bengal). His works was much more angular back when and highly stylish already, which was a common trait shared by many of his Gaijin studios peers. Barbara looks like she is having good fun here and she refreshingly look like a teenager. She is kind of the anti-Panda 🙂 In terms of pure composition, I like how Jason used her spreading her cape/wings to delimit the sparse but effective backgrounds (on which he managed to infuse some depth despite the apparent simplicity. All done in markers when copics were not all the rage). His use of black & white (on her cape, body and costume) AND space on the board is also to be noted. He was obviously quite good at the time but would still soar to much much higher artistic heights. Social/Sharing |

I clicked on the thumbnail to check it out and was surprised by how well done the piece is for a convention drawing!

This is great! I love that only the background looks like it was done at a convention while the Batgirl figure appears to have been a commission done at home!

Beautiful convention piece, F M! I really like the energy Barbara is sporting here; it's a really fun vibe. The markers add to the depth and texture of the piece, for sure (great execution!), and you can see traces of his influence on Bachalo's work as well. Sweet piece, F M - congrats!

I would say that the similarity between Pearson & Bachalo arkens back to their own main influence, namely Michael Golden.

Fun early work. You can already see some of his signature elements with the hatch on her torso and of course that Pearson face. Thanks for remind me that I haven't picked up a Pearson piece in a while. Need to get on that.

Exceptionally sharp! The angles taken create a dynamic feel much like Batman the Animated series would later adopt. The bat signal projected onto a building is more real world and more Dark Knight Returns. Flawless execution just as you'd expect from Pearson.

The great composition is the first thing that popped out at me. A fun take on Batgirl. Congrats!

I see some Timm in his style. As you zoom in, this is really nice and crisp. The look on her face is perfect Batgirl attitude, imo. And the choice to add the Gotham skyline in her cape shadow is really solid, especially for a convention sketch. Very nice, FM. Congrats!

Nice more stylized take. From a graphic sense I do like the more traditional line art of Barbara vs. the looser cityscape - gives a nice contrast. And gotta love the smile :) Congrats on another sweet Pearson piece!
