Description

Four (4) wonderful original panels from the 1961 Donald Duck story „Ducking Out“, by the great Tony Strobl. These panels only survived because they were cut from the original story, probably because the editor thought that it was too long or they needed the space for something else. As the published story has 10 pages, it’s safe to say that the story must have had at least 11 pages (more probably 12 pages, but more about this later) before it was cut, so there must have been at least 4 more panels (or rather 1 1/2 pages), of which I know that 2 more (these fit in the published 8th page) have definitely survived.

So where do these fit into the story? When looking at the text as well as the back of the art, it’s clear that panels 1 & 2 stood next to each other and that they formed the top row of a halfpage. Storywise they would fit in between rows 3 and 4 of the second page. This leads me to the assumption, that these 2 panels were the top row of the original 3rd page and that there must have been at least one additional row (or 2 panels) of original art somewhere before (pages 1 or 2). Let’s continue with the two final panels…when looking at the text and the back of the art, it’s clear that panels 3 & 4 stood next to each other and that they (also) formed the top row of a halfpage. Storywise they would fit in between rows 1 and 2 of the published 3rd page. This again leads me to the assumption, that these 2 panels were the top row of the original 4th page and that there must have been at least one additional row (or 2 panels) of original art before (page 3). Together with the other 2 known panels that would fit in the published 8th page, the count is already up to 10 additional panels (or 1 1/4 pages). Knowing that the artists were paid for full pages, it’s more likely that story originally had 12 pages, meaning that there could have been yet another 6 unpublished panels…well we can still hope that these might turn up one day…

The story „Ducking Out“ was first published in Donald Duck #77 (May 1961) and later published at least 42 times in 17 countries…btw, I love Liggera’s inks on Strobl… :-))

I just saw that the 6 panels were indeed published in Sweden in 2020…thanks J & G… :-))

Unfortunately most of Tony Strobl’s artwork has been destroyed, with only about 20 surviving covers from 1957-1972 and pencil pages as well as some inked pages surviving from mostly 1968-1970. From before 1968 there’s only a few covers and the 6 unpublished panels from the above story that are known to me to have survived…

Great find! Strobl at this point was an underestimated artist, and these panels show his qualities.
