Description

While keeping up with soccer news from the Tokyo Olympics 2020, played in 2021, the USWNT struggled, but the Canadian team caught my attention. Jessie Fleming joined the national team at 15 years old, went to play collegiately at UCLA, and plays professionally for Chelsea in the WSL. The quarterfinal against Brazil went to a penalty shootout. Canadian captain Christine Sinclair led off, but Brazil's Barbara saved it. Jessie was the second Canadian kicker and scored at the 50 second mark of this Canada vs. Brazil quarterfinal shootout video. In the scoreless semifinal, Canada was awarded a penalty kick and team captain Sinclair selected Fleming to take the kick seen here at the 4 minute mark of this Canada vs. US semifinal video. Canada won Bronze medals at the Olympics in 2012 and 2016. This year, they played Sweden in the Women's Football Gold Medal Match. Sweden had knocked Canada out of the Women's World Cup in 2019 and scored the first goal. At the ninety minute mark of the video, Jessie Fleming takes the penalty kick and equalizes the score. The teams remained tied after two overtime periods and went to a penalty kick shootout at the two hour 45 minute point with Fleming in the first spot for Canada.
