DescriptionI've never been into sports cards but I love them now. The previous owner of this beauty is concentrating on that hobby, and thus posted this at the most recent CAFCON. After some extreme, perhaps ill-advised, financial gymnastics, I was able to reach a deal with this excellent gentleman. As Burkey would say - JUBILEE IN EVERY PANEL! This was really one of the most perfect pages for me. An issue I had and read to pieces. The introduction of an Asian-American member to the X-Men was a landmark moment and here we have Jubilee in her absolute element, less than a year after she was created and defined now with a distinctive personality and really interesting dynamic with Wolverine and the rest of the team. Claremont has given her some absolutely wonderful dialogue here and the sound effects are amazing. On to the art - I don't quite know where to begin. The 1990s had just started and Lee/Williams were on a mission to prove themselves. They pull out all the stops executing these early pages. Scott Williams was kind enough to walk me through some of the elements at SDCC this year - Scott loves ninjas and I don't think you could ever find more luscious ninja gis. The art notes on the margin are likely from Lee. Scott also mentioned using screen tones a lot more before printing techniques improved. A tip of the hat to the way the art team laid out the panels. Jubilee's subtle hand break of the gutter leads the eye to the next panel, and the word balloons break the gutters again leading the eye downwards. Complex yet logical. Nice little peak a boo with the Mandarin in the last two panels. Just thrilled to bits to add this, for me, one-and-done Lee/Williams UXM page to the collection. Update July 2022 - My fine friend, Fisch, pointed out that the Primary image was pulled and used for card art in the Flair Marvel Annual 1994 set. Cool! Social/Sharing |

Ah, this was at the height of my college days X-title reading comic collecting indulgence. Nice example for a one-and-done indeed.

Such a great issue and a great page. I always think to this era of her being "Robin" to Logans "Batman", likely in part to the color schemes on this costume and a bit of the design. Such a wonderful page.

This was when The Dark Knight Returns crossed over into X-Men. The influence is strong and so is the artwork that aims to take the same attitude with Jubilee representing the bright, cheery, innocent center for which the X-Men's dark tone will pull against.

Hey babe, I'd like to talk to you. Howsabout coming back to my room for a little Boom Boom?
Getting horrific flashbacks of tagging along with friends to dance clubs on Saturday nights back in 1986! 🤢

Damn, I just realized I this is a Jubilee centric page, not Boom Boom. I don't know why, but I've confused their names ever since both characters were created. Everyone must've been really confused as to the context of my Boom Boom message, which is why I'm responding to it rather than deleting it. All in good fun, no shame in my game! All that matters in any case is that it's a great, action packed page with a superb 1st panel and who doesn't love Hand ninjas?

Whichever one of us that hasn't used that Cringy pickup line in high school throw the first stone? No stones being tossed here.

Great to see how jubilant you are to get this page....ok, not great, but I gave it a shot.

One-and-done: you nailed it, M L - this one has it all, from beautiful, detailed fine-line renditions of the main character, to on-page "studio film-flammery" with expertly applied white paint strobe "booms" ("ZappaDappaDO!") and strong "old school" inking on the hand ninjas (which in turn counterpoints the feeling of madcap "modern-ness" with all the striking, expertly applied zipatone). My favorite is actually panel 5, with the zipped suit providing the framing of Jubilee, building on the geometry and lighting of panel 4, ABOVE it. This is nothing short of a carnival, and Mssrs. Lee and Williams are not wasting a single centimeter of this beauty in their efforts to prove and define themselves (and the subsequent era of comics this thing burst out of). And now YOU own this. THAT is a glorious thing, M L. Sincere congrats!

Huge congrats on getting YOUR Lee UXM page, M! I remember chatting with you about this one and it hit all the beats for you as far as an X-Men OR Lee example. Great splashy shot of Jubile & great action oriented storytelling!
