DescriptionWhen I tuned into the 1967 Spiderman cartoon TV show as a child, I distinctly remembered how Peter Parker was an outcast. Shunned for being a nerd. He didn't swim in the pool of popularity. Humility and trying to do the right thing were tenants of his personality. This part of his persona stemmed from the Lee/Ditko characterization put forward in those first 38 issues. This particular page is a prime example. Panel after panel shows Parker being the object of ridicule by big man on campus Flash Thompson. It also marks very early appearances for both Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn. Lee and Ditko plant foreshadowing of Gwen's fascination with Peter, which would blossom shortly thereafter when John Romita would take over the book.Social/Sharing |

Great Peter Parker/ Flash page as their fighting and squabbles seem to never end. Throw in Gwen and Harry into the mix and you have a dramatic teen situation that can't be topped! Oh, and let's not forget the "bad guy" and his prototype robot! Wowza!

Ditko breathes life into and made us care about the most important supporting cast in all of comics. They serve as the backbone in the ongoing soap opera that involves Peter Parker and shape who Spider-Man is and what he represents. They are his motivation to do better for others even at the risk and cost of himself. This page has fantastic interactions with characters that will change his life and has some of Ditko's most refined work for the title before he left.

Marvel and Spider-Man's popularity exploded in 1962 and has to this day, 60 years later, stood the test of time as probably the greatest backstory and supporting cast in the entire history of comics. The characters were imbued with realistic, human foibles that gave them a gravitas that had until then never existed in the world of superhero comics. This page is a great example of that.

Great page- - especially like panel 3 and 5...panel 5 almost looks like it from a Dr. Strange book - congrats!

Awesome! Lots of personality packed into a simple "talking" page.
