Description

GARTH WILLIAMS, (AMERICAN 1912-1996)

CHARCOAL ON CARD STOCK, 14.5″ X 11.25″
from pages 24-25 of AMIGO

A beautiful stunning detailed piece of Garth Williams final published artwork for pages 24 and 25 in the book “Amigo”. The art is rendered in charcoal on light board stock and is wonderfully rich in color. A fantastic drawing of the young prairie dog, while in a family meeting deep underground in their burrow, with a small adorable mouse peering into their home through an opening in the background. A wonderfully detailed and unusually large piece, with outstanding depictions of the four prairie dogs. Amigo is being warned by his mother that humans are wild, while he is trying to convince his elders and family that he "can tame that child", (the young boy in the book). The card stock is lightly tacked to one corner of a backer board which may either be removed or trimmed to the edge of the artwork. The art is signed by Garth Williams in full signature along the left edge, with small publishers notes along the bottom. The backing board has leftover tape stains which are NOT on the art, (but only on the backing board)

The art is signed by Garth Williams in full signature along the left edge, with small publishers notes along the bottom.

PROVENANCE: The art was purchased from an auction house, who in turn acquired these pieces direct from the estate of Garth Williams. Each piece is an original and sold directly from his estate. A copy of the original invoice will be included with each piece, and will provide both provenance and authenticity for the art. The piece is signed by Garth Williams lower left.

The art is in excellent condition and would be stunning framed.

**Garth Williams was a prominent illustrator of several of the most prominent children’s books including Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), The Cricket In Times Square, and The Rescuers (1959). Many of his original illustrations from these book have sold attaining high premiums, including his original illustration of the dust jacket for Charlotte’s Web which realized $155,000 at auction in 2010, and between $10,000 and $75,000 for original artwork of the interior pages. Other notable auction pricing of Williams original illustrations include sales of the original artwork for the interior pages of Stuart Little which also averaged in the $15,000 range per piece.
