When we think of the quintessential pre-historic battle -- an image of a famed fight between a tyrant lizard king, a formidable, three horned giant herbivorous, and an optimistic caveman with a spear, comes to mind. When fans of fabled art (and comic art fans in general) think of the master of fantasy, Frank Frazetta reigns as king.
Frazetta is recognized as one of, if not the greatest fantasy artist of the last 100 years, rich with creativity, imagination, and a more successful career than most artists could ever imagine. He produced art for a multitude of comic strips, comic books, and novels, and scores of wildly popular posters along the way, all while reinventing the field of fantasy illustration. This classic arrangement has all the hallmarks of an exquisite Frazetta piece -- powerful framework, haunting background details while vivid and subtle colors highlight the clash of the behemoths.
This pre-historic wetland scene was published as the cover to the Science Fiction book Club paperback Orn by Piers Anthony.
Although this work is titled Tyrannosaurus Rex, the T-Rex is known to have two claws, and it was mainly the Dromaeosaurs that had three. However, Frazetta has been quoted as saying "I always loved dinosaurs and prehistoric worlds. I could get lost in the art of Burian. Now after watching all of the documentaries on A&E, Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel, I wish all of that information had been known when I was younger. My paintings of dinosaurs are based on what scientist knew at the time I was creating them. I guess they hold up pretty well, but if I was doing them today my T-Rex would be a lightning fast killing machine."- Frank Frazetta as quoted in Testament: The Life and Art of Frank Frazetta.
