DescriptionA splendid example of the Phil Hester / Eric Gapstur goodness found throughout their latest ‘Justice League’ run! This piece spoke to me because of the great layout and execution of all the different ‘tiers’ (each feeling like its own DPS almost), and that sweet mix of elements that a fun JLA story always captures. You have the top tier butt-kicking (courtesy of Manhunter and Black Canary, in front of some superb backgrounds with paint spatter and reversed silhouettes), the middle tier clue-hunting (thanks to Batman and The Question in front of the dramatically shattered plate glass window), and the bottom tier ‘ooh and ahh’ factor of our heroes on display (showcasing Superman and the effect his presence has on any room he walks into). Great POVs and energetic storytelling via the fine Hester pencils, smoothed over nicely by the slick Gapstur inks - a heroic team in their own right! :) Thank you, Eric! Social/Sharing |

Holy crap! THIS right here is what makes Phil Hester great. This is all about shapes and understanding how to not only stage a scene but have a great understanding of how shadow and light works in order to clearly separate the foreground, middle ground and background from each other. The illusion of depth here is so masterful and the storytelling is as clear as day. I'm gonna be hugely disappointed if Snorek doesn't choose to feature this as one of his top 10 on next week's CAL Update episode! As an art teacher himself, he can expound the virtues of this piece all day long! You hear that, Chris?!? But you know, no pressure or anything, Chris. Just a thought.... 😜

I wanted Hester like you eh
I wanted Gapstur inks
So I tried for art like you
And I got swept away
I didn't know that Bendis' like gold and
I needed someone to show a good page
So I looked at art and then figured out that
When the drop comes I'd take JLA
If you want to
I Manhunt you
Cry Canary away from here
So Super inside
So Batman out there
Answered my Questions was collector who cares

Hester's art is so distinctive and great, I can't fault you for going after such a nice page. The second panel is my fav'.
