DescriptionI loved Brian Michael Bendis' Avengers Saga, so I started a collecting goal to acquire a page from every artist who provided interior art to his New Avengers, Avengers, and Dark Avengers series. It is with great pleasure that I add this page by Mike Deodato to my collection: here, Norman Osborn has tasked Ghost to help him open Tony Stark's impenetrable cache of Iron Man suits inside Avengers Tower. Mike has drawn more issues of Avengers comics than any other artist, and Bendis has more Avengers writing credits than any other writer. They helped each other become great Avengers creators IMO! I love how Mike's work on Thunderbolts made him the ideal artist for this series. His mastery of Norman Osborn's Tommy Lee Jonesish likeness even extends to middle shots, like in this page. Ghost looks super-spooky here as well, Deodato perhaps borrowing his look from the Star Wars bounty hunter 4LOM. Mike was an important part of the Bendis Avengers Saga, and it feels great to finally cross him off my list of contributors.Social/Sharing |

Deodato did some great work on this series. He conveyed a dark mood that was perfect for the material. Congrats on the pickup!

DARK is right, Michael! I love Deodato's Steranko-like grease pencil finishes, and the ubiquitous shadows that Mike and Brian cast over Dark Avengers! Thanks for the great comment!

Another great pickup! Bendis is the architect of many ideas that still resonate through the current stories and has people salivating for them to get adapted in movies since they are easy natural transitions. Deodato makes every one of these panels interesting with the sinister shadow look for the villains.

Marcus, I totally agree with your assessment, as usual! I think a Dark Avengers movie with Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn would be fun to watch, especially if they adapted some of the stories from this epic!

Yes!! Fantastic pick up, Doc! A great way to cross this titanic name off your Bendis list, for sure. This iteration of Ghost was by far my favorite; frail and spider-thin in appearance (love the angle he's shown from in that top panel), like the stiletto that silently slips between your ribs... Ghost is fantastic in all panels, Ares is a tank, Moonstone is beautiful and dangerous, and if you're going for a Dark Avemgers piece, you simply HAVE to have a Deodato Osborn (and you have a great one here). And what a moment! The repercussions of this moment are felt through every other 'Dark Reign' story, as Norman gets his hands on a suit of armor and becomes Iron Patriot. I'm absolutely delighted for you, Doc; another essential name crossed off your list in signature style - sincere, ecstatic congrats!
