Sometimes you go the extra mile for a page. Literally.

This was an eBay find I was determined to get my hands on. Unfortunately, the auction was scheduled to end smack in the middle of a Saturday.

While this normally wouldn't be an issue, it just so happened to be ending the same Saturday I was attending my first Heroes Con. Which, in the days before smartphones were a thing, meant I couldn't do my bidding from the con floor.

Now I could have just put in my max bid and let things play out. However, I didn't want to underestimate my max and have someone snipe it from me last second. Besides, that was my strategy, as it's always better to be the sniper than the snipee. LOL.

So, rather than chance it, I hoofed it back to my hotel and proceeded to track the auction from the internet accessible computers in the lobby, where I put in my last second bid to win the page.

As a Superman For All Seasons collector, I was elated to add this gem to my collection. Even better, though, I was at Heroes Con that weekend to hang out with Tim and some of our pals from his old message board. So, I had good news to share when we all went out to dinner that night.

There's so much to love about this page. The first panel is a highlight, obviously, as we see the moment after Superman stops the train on the DPS that preceded it. The storytelling is top-notch too, as Jeph and Tim take a moment to let the size difference between hero and locomotive sink in for an extra beat. Tim also rewards the patient reader who sticks around to take in details like the shattered glass, dangling headlights and bent wheels underneath the train. Not to mention the hand prints indented in the metal.

But the last panel is noteworthy too, as it's the first moment in the story where you see Superman uncertain. Things have been going his way to this point in the series, but it's here that Lex turns the tables on his nemesis and shows him there's some enemies he can't defeat with all his powers and strength.

Who but Tim Sale would think to put hand-shaped indentations on the front of the train. Genius.

Totally agree with Brian - those handprints have the fingerprints of Tim Sale all over them. Such a "typically" unique viewpoint / staging / detail from this amazing artist. Beautiful pick up (all those years ago); a wonderful addition to keep the rest of your incredible Tim Sale collection in good, good, good company. :)
