I don't think I'm alone in appreciating Gabriele Dell'Otto as one of the most distinct & attractive cover artists of the last decade. So, seeing him on the guest list for Lake Como Comic Art Festival 2022 instantly put him right at the top of my list, near icons like Frank Cho, Mark Brooks & Olivier Coipel.

The first day, I met Gabriele early in the morning, asked if he wouldn't mind personalizing my already signed books, and if he was doing any sketches at the show. We talked a bit and got a picture together. It's difficult to put to words just how down-to-earth & friendly (and funny!) Gabriele is. After having met so many incredible and incredibly nice artists, Gabriele will always stand out as one of the nicest. The fact that he knew and remembered my name throughout the show, just from the signatures he personalized for me, is just a tiny detail in the amazing experience.

Back to the show - he put me on a very small list & told me to come back later that day - without any real promises. We talked again two or three times that day when I checked in and he said that he would do something for me the day after.

On Sunday, I circled back and in the afternoon, after finishing one last painting, he would work on 4 pieces at the show. One was a sketch cover, another was a Nova on a great Guardians of the Galaxy jam piece, then one more Spidey, I think, and finally, we had my piece.

This 9x12 piece featuring the Amazing Spider-Man definitely surprised me when I saw it. I wasn't expecting the extra ink wash, or a full figure, looming out of his web and the shadows. Perhaps a pencil sketch, sure. But this? Such a great figure and so distinctly Gabriele Dell'Otto.

And just to hammer home how nice and friendly Gabriele was - he refused to take the full amount and gave me a discount on the price he had originally mentioned.
