DescriptionMatt Baker and Robert Webb - “Sheena, Queen of the Jungle” #18 (Fiction House, 1945-1952).This patchwork composite page contains seven reassembled original-art panels, condensed from a 1945 Sheena story (Jumbo Comics #75) and pieced together/retouched by 1950s Iger Shop newcomer Jay Disbrow. This example finds the jungle heroine attempting to halt a leopard attack. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 18". Pencils: Robert Webb; Matt Baker (on women) - Inks: Matt Baker. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Un genere molto diffuso tra la fine degli anni ’30 fino agli inizi del 1950 fu quello di alcuni personaggi femminili le cosiddette tarzanidi del fumetto, personaggi nati dal successo delle strisce a fumetti di Tarzan di Hal Foster. La primissima “Jungle girl” fu Sheena che debuttò nel 1937 sulle pagine della rivista britannica Wags. Fu ideata addirittura dal grande Will Eisner e da Jerry Iger. Sheena introduceva alcune caratteristiche inedite per quei tempi, una lunga chioma bionda e un bel fisico da pin-up, fu la prima "ragazza della giungla" a indossare un audacissimo (per l'epoca) bikini di pelle di leopardo. Sheena debuttò negli Stati Uniti (1938) nella rivista della Fiction House “Jumbo Comics” n.1 e successivamente, nel 1942, ebbe una propria serie che durò 18 numeri, “Sheena Queen of the Jungle”, il primo albo a fumetti in assoluto ad essere intitolato a un personaggio femminile, battendo di alcuni mesi il n.1 di Wonder Woman! In Italia troviamo alcune avventure d Sheena all’interno della serie Jumbo Comics dell’editore De Leo, in particolare nei numeri 2 e 6 del 1950. Questa tavola originale di Sheena è disegnata da Robert Webb e Matt Baker, quest’ultimo molto famoso per le sue meravigliose figure femminili, si dice abbia ispirato Dave Stevens. Baker è indicato come il primo afroamericano a realizzare fumetti, purtroppo è scomparso nel 1959 a soli 38 anni per problemi cardiaci, quindi le sue opere sono abbastanza rare. Questa tavola è pubblicata su Jumbo Comics n.75 del 1945 e successivamente su Sheena n.18 del 1952, in questo passaggio la pagina è stata modificata e censurata! Social/Sharing |

Non forse ma sicuramente! Non a caso ho anche la serie originale di Pantera Bionda con le magnifiche cover di Magni!

Good girl art that still inspires! The panel with the slinky and powerful leopard is a mirror for Sheena's powerfully sexy and slinky character.
