Description

For my money, Bilquis Every is the single best working comic artist, and among the all time great. She gets, and does, it all. Her meticulous lines, sense of pacing, framing, and masterful expressions make me genuinely happy. Wanting to track down her art after I read The Sandman Universe Special, my first introduction to her art, was what got me into collecting OA in the first place. I emailed her, DM'd her anywhere I could find her on social media, basically stalked her like a creep. Thankfully that was to complete no avail and I think she missed, or mercifully ignored all the messages (it was only like 6 total... not too too bad?... a little bad).

When she signed on with Felix, I was overjoyed, and did not miss the opportunity to buy a page. I have since bought several more from this series and The Dreaming series she did with Simon Spurrier, which for me is nearly as good as the original Sandman series. This was the first page I purchased and got me rolling on OA. It wasn't my first ever piece of comic OA, but it was the first I actively sought out (as opposed to happening upon at a convention).

Anyway, this page is the one immediately after Dora's first appearance, which she is caught by Matthew the Raven partying in a random old woman's dreams and showing off her fiery, personality and indignant stubbornness when Matthew questions her. The final panel pre-empts the reveal of Dora's... spicier side.

Every panel is an illustrative wonder as the storytelling comes in like storybook form. Very fitting for such a literary story. Evely does that on a regular basis pairing art for the purpose of moving the narrative!
