DescriptionJustice League of America Super hero Stamp original artwork (circa, 1975-76) by Neal Adams' Continuity Studios (pencils and inks). Beautiful piece which features the famed Justice League of America including Superman, Batman, Flash, Atom, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Red Tornado, Hawkman, Black Canary and Green Lantern - 11 heroes in all. This piece was done by Neal Adams' Continuity Studios and was used for a JLA stamp included in a Super Hero Booklit in 1976. It is difficult to state exactly how much of the artwork Neal himself did and how much his assistants aided in the finishes. There are several characters that look like all Neal Adams artwork (pencils and inks), such as the Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow and Black Canary and the Hawkman images. Others look as if he had someone else ink the images, perhaps Dick Giordano or other members of Crusty Bunkers. Since the final color production piece would be printed at a very small size, the characters images are done in a more basic design style than Neal's larger, more detailed work. Throughout the 1970's Neal Adams was the undisputed Super Star of comicdom as a myriad of companies would often license various DC properties to help in the promotion their products, with Neal being the go-to artist. This piece is no exception. All in all, this JLA piece represents a very intriguing part of DC history beyond the comic book medium. Image size measures 11.5" wide by 5.125" tall. Social/Sharing |

This stamp was part of the 1976 DC SUPER HERO STAMP ALBUM.
It is interesting to note that the Album page actually features a different version of the illustration. Sorry that I don't have a better image to share -

The alterations include:
-Wonder Woman turned to face the camera
-Green Arrow's costume being updated to the bronze age version
-Martian Manhunter being replaced by Red Tornado
-Black Canary being added
Your scan of the original art does not appear to show signs of paste ups or white out, so I assume the final artwork was completely redrawn (though likely liteboxed overall). Any additional info about the genesis of this great piece of licensed art would be appreciated!
