DescriptionStanding in -very- sharp contrast to the organic feel of his sumptuous, inkwash-laden swamp pages (full of layered lushness and depth), this piece is a cold and terrifying (almost abstract) rendition of the industrial Parliament of Gears. Although it’s all traditionally rendered (!!), it really feels more like collage or clip art, used as an intentionally harsh and disjointed backdrop (all sharp edges and jagged teeth, rusty cogs, and grinding chains) to evoke an intense reaction in readers (and the Chaplin fan in me can't help but see signs of 'Modern Times'... :) ).Does anything feel more alien or uncomfortable in the context of green growing things than industrial decay? Can Levi hope to overcome the Pale Pilgrim, the new avatar of industrialization, as he crushes everything underfoot and makes very convincing moves to render The Green irrelevant? Horror can be as “simply” defined as introducing something alien into familiar surroundings and watching the dust fly (or congeal into sentience, as happened in this run). This recent Swamp Thing was a brilliant modern horror-fairy tale, taking multiple modern fears (identity, destiny, climate, industrialization, greed, and family) and combining them into a heady cocktail of, ultimately, love, redemption, choice, and responsibility. Thank you, always, to Rubén and to Mike! (Find more of Mike’s artwork at comicbookartgallery.com !) Social/Sharing |

So much detail throughout the entire page. I can't believe I'm just now discovering Perkins work. Congrats!

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom, boom, boom
"Hey", I said, "grab my cash, I've got to take this home!"

On a Swamp Thing from a Barbeau movie
In a Ram V where they turn Levi
You start growing through the cogs like Chaplin story
Contemplating his Times
He comes out of the sun like a cypress running
Wash like watercolors in my brain
Don't bother asking Mike’s motivation
He’ll just tell you that he came
With the gears to attack

Wowie wow wow WOW, Mike Perkins continues to amaze and astound. This page probably took him three days to draw! As you point out, such a sharp contrast between the organic plant-like Swamp Thing and all those iron gears and other industrial stuff. Is that Swamp Thing forming from those tentacles that are coming out of the gears? He appears fully formed there at the bottom, so I'm not sure. But what a great last panel! Fantastic add!

EPIC pickup! Perkins shows his mastery of mechanical and organic form in one fell swoop!

Ludicrous page... stark juxtaposition of Swamp Thing and the mechanical gears is something I haven't seen. What an embarrassment of artistic riches here.

Super page! Love how Perkins constrasts machines and organic textures and forms in this outstanding series

I love the tilted angle of the last panel. It introduces some dynamism in a scene that is static by definition.

I feel like if still alive, Hans Ruedi Giger would swoon over this piece, a worthy successor to his biomech-megafauna. At the very least I envy this piece! God I love Perkins on this book. I wish there was more coming! Congrats!

Justin, that is -SUCH- a great point, and it had slipped right past me! This page would indeed register on a Giger counter... :) Thank you for the awesome comment, Justin (and everyone)!

Very reminiscent of Totleben's work on the classic Swamp Thing #60. A lot of the best Swamp Thing stories have come from placing Swampy into built or nonorganic environments outside of the swamp (the multiple Gotham-set stories, for example). This piece is so effective because Perkins gradually introduces more and more organic elements with each successive panel until that magnificent bottom half of the page with a fully realized Swampy. Great stuff. I'll need to put this new Swamp Thing title on my reading list after it's concluded.

Thanks, Mark - those are great points about those classic weekend getaways Swampy has made in the past to the big GC (among other places), and this story certainly belongs up there on the list... The run has concluded and the third (and final) trade drops in a few weeks. I'd be happy to send you my trades if you'd like to read them (just let me know). Thanks for the great comment, Mark (and all)!

Thanks for the generous offer, Jason. I've bookmarked the series on DC Universe Infinite Ultra (or whatever it's called) to read later. That service has been a real lifeline for me because I do like to keep up with what's coming out of the Big Two, even if my reading interests have taken me to different material of late.

Man, there are so many outstanding pages from this run and this one's right up there! Perfect example incorporating the green and the industrial, and that rendering of SW moving through the gear, then reincorporating?! So awesome. This page really does have it all, Jason. Congrats!
