Description

Dave McKean covers are big with collectors. And sometimes they are really big! Like this incredible oversized shadowbox style piece that is a tribute to one of Jack Kirby's Fourth World Saga characters, Mister Miracle. The cover features a face with circuitry on it (a tribute to Scott Free's Motherbox), and it is also bound by actual physical chains and locks. These were the tool of the trade for the famous master escape artist publicly known as Mister Miracle. There is text in the grid on the main image which reads "Scott Free". And just below that it is "signed" the same way as "daveMcKean".
McKean's cover's helped define Neil Gaiman's bold experiment in mixing modern Horror and adult Fairy Tales, and then firmly embedding it into the existing DC Comics Super-Hero Universe. The covers told you right up front that "this title is different". The first story arc (the six-part "Preludes & Nocturnes"), not only featured Mister Miracle as a child, but also members of the JLA. And many issues down the road, Gaiman would tap other mainstream DC characters from titles as diverse as House of Mystery, Infinity, Inc., and even Jack Kirby's short-lived predecessor Sandman series.
This piece, created in mixed media and "found object" sculpture, includes circuit boards, wires, plaster, chains, and other objects. It is a large piece that is housed in an impressive 34" x 44" x 5" wooden shadowbox with a Plexiglas front frame.
