Description

E. C. Segar Thimble Theatre (Popeye) Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 8-1-1935.
This strip is taken from the story “ Popeye’s Ark”, in which the strong sailor decides to embark on an epic undertaking. Mixing the stories of Noah's ark and the discovery of America, Popeye decides to build an ark to discover a virgin land and found a new empire, an unexplored continent called Spinaciuga (originally Spinachova).
The expedition is financed by Mr. Sphinx who, however, puts an extremely restrictive condition, in the new nation there must be no taxes or women.
Popeye the Sailor, unhappy ruler of the kingdom of Spinachova, receives an unwelcome visit from the Court Jester sent to him by Gino Miso. The absence of women from the population makes the natives restless, of course, and Popeye is consequently a sad dictator. Or as Popeye phrases it, "I yama sad dictipator." Nobody mangles the "langwidge" like Popeye the Sailor.

Questa striscia è tratta dalla storia "L'arca di Braccio di Ferro”, in cui il forte marinaio decide di intraprendere un'impresa epica. Mescolando le storie dell'arca di Noè e della scoperta dell'America, Braccio di Ferro decide di costruire un'arca per scoprire una terra vergine e fondare un nuovo impero, un continente inesplorato chiamato Spinaciuga (originariamente Spinachova).
La spedizione è finanziata dal signor Gino Miso che, però, pone una condizione estremamente restrittiva, nella nuova nazione non devono esserci né tasse né donne.
Braccio di Ferro, infelice sovrano del regno di Spinachova, riceve una visita indesiderata dal buffone di corte inviatogli da Gino Miso. L'assenza di donne dalla popolazione rende i nativi irrequieti, ovviamente, e Braccio di Ferro è di conseguenza un triste dittatore. O come dice Popeye, "I yama sad dictipator". Nessuno storpia il "langwidge" come Braccio di Ferro.

A wonderful piece of history! People tend to forget how popular Popeye was for at least half of the 20th century and these Segar strips were early on some of the most read of its day.
