DescriptionSo I love comic art as does everyone here, but I also have aspirations to become a comic artists one day, so some of these artists are basically celebrity status for me that reflect inspiration in my own work.Olivier Coipel is at or near the top of that list personally, and has been for years. When I started collecting art this year, Getting a drawing from him alone was something I didn't see happening any time soon. I knew he lived far away from anywhere I had access to and in recent years, especially post Covid, wasn't doing a ton of cons and wasn't taking a ton of commissions at those cons either. I already had planned to meet many artists at NYCC (My first) and get a few pieces when I found out he'd be attending. It was exciting just to have the prospect of meeting him, but I wasn't expecting to come back with a piece of art by him, thinking he either wouldn't be taking any requests, or if he was it'd be way out of my price range as I'm on a much tighter budget than a lot of collectors. Well, I wasn't able to meet him day 1 for a multitude of reasons, one being that his art reps table got completely swamped. By the time it died down I found out that he WAS doing sketches but he was all tuckered out for the day, I could come back tomorrow for another chance(which was for me, my last chance as I was only attending 2 days). The next day I got to the con much earlier and went straight to his table. I was 5th in line, and it filled up quickly behind me. He hadn't arrived yet but his art rep was there taking the requests and relaying them to him. Now I do switch things up occasionally, but given WHO this was, I naturally request my favorite, Rocket Raccoon which was promptly rejected. I was anticipating this, I wasn't sure if he'd ever drawn the character before honestly(he said he had not), and its certainly not someone he's used to getting, so I had backups in mind, but then he changed his mind and reserved himself to do it. I was in line for quite a while, but was determined to make this happen if there was any chance. Finally the man himself arrives and I watch as he knocks these requests out with seemingly no effort, putting out gorgeous portraits of iconic female heroes. When its my turn, he is reminded of my request and humorously expressed how this request broke his flow of what he was used to drawing. He needed some costume reference so I pull it up on my phone for him to draw from. These were basically head sketches but he opted to add some upper torso details. Thus I had any choice of what costume I wanted, while I usually make it a point to not request specific looks and let the artists do what they want. The one I ended up going with was more based on how easy it was to find a clear image of than it being my favorite, but what I went with is the yellow spacesuit he was wearing around 2017 in the comics which still looks great. So he gets to work working on it, and during the process I keep my phone propped up while he makes the piece, telling him how much his art means to me, but at some point we kinda have a rapport going, we are talking, he's greeting other pros coming to his table to say hi, I get to talk to them a bit, they joke about not wanting to draw this raccoon either, I even get to show him some of my work. I probably was being an annoying fanboy the whole time but I think I kept it together ok, and I suppose I was memorable enough just by virtue of the unusual request that were we to cross paths again he might even remember me. He ultimately added a bit more "bust" to the whole piece given Rockets uh... stature. I ask for a photo when its done, asking a comic writer who was visiting the table to be the photographer, which led to a misunderstanding of who was photographing who that led to Mr. Coipel, the writer and myself all laughing together. We get our photo and I spend the next several hours wondering if that actually just happened. If you told me when I started this particular hobby that by the end of my first year I'd not just get Olivier Coipel to draw my favorite Marvel character for me, but I'd chat with him, laugh with him and have genuine personal experience rather than just a friendly transaction, I'd have said you were crazy and it was impossible. But it is possible, if you grab opportunities when they come and don't let them pass you buy. I had other great experiences this weekend I won't bog down this already overlong post with, but suffice to say this is now a grail piece in my collection and a priceless prized possession. A great piece to go along with the memory of the encounter that will always be a part of it! If that is indeed one of the few Rocket pieces he may ever draw, it is even better for being unique.

Congrats on getting a sketch of your favorite character from your favorite artist! I remember I was also a bundle of nerves when I was in a similar situation, and it's awesome that you got a cool story and a cool drawing (and a cool photo?) out of it.

Wicked cool sketch and story, Joshua! Mega-congrats, and remember the experience for when you're on the other side of the table, sketching for fans... :) What a brilliant experience (that netted treasure!) from your first NYCC! Congrats again!
