Description

Vonnegut remarked that you could find everything you need to know about the human condition in the pages of Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov. I would argue Berlin, penned and inked by Jason Lutes, is the graphic series that comes the closest to replicating this feat. Though Lutes started his work on Berlin nearly 30 year ago, his depiction of the last days of the German Weimar Republic through the eyes of a socially stratified cast feels disturbingly precient. Some will radicalize and foment revolution; other detach into hedonism. None are untouched by the changing world.

I developed quite unreasonable expectation about this hobby when Berlin pages were some of the first I sought out, and despite being created 20 years prior I was able to snag them direct from the artist's site. We get a perfect introduction to our priciple characters, Kurt, Marthe, and Berlin, as well as brief clinic on multipoint perpective in the last panel. Tschüß!

Amazing page introducing us to Kurt and Marthe! Berlin is one of the great works of the medium and we should be grateful to Jason Lutes dedicating such a sizeable chunk of his life to seeing this masterpiece through.
