LEON BEROTH - Don Winslow of the Navy Daily Comic Strip Episode #148A (Bell Syndicate, 1936).

Beroth's crisp, thick-lined artwork fairly leaps from the page. The emphatic style of inking bears a welcome resemblance to Chester Gould's eye-catching designs in Dick Tracy, from the same general period. Martinek, a Naval veteran of World War I, recruited fellow Navy man Beroth as illustrator, and then secured a formal endorsement from the Department of the Navy, which found Don Winslow to be an influential force for recruitment.

Leon Beroth disegnatore di Don Winslow della marina, personaggio ben noto ai collezionisti di vintage, � stato protagonista di diverse pubblicazioni italiane, sugli �Albi della Risata�, �l�Intrepido" ed una breve serie a striscia edita nel 1948. Il personaggio fu inventato da Frank Martinek, un veterano della marina della I guerra mondiale, che reclut� il collega della Marina Beroth come illustratore. Don Wislow doveva essere un fumetto di propaganda ed una forza influente per il reclutamento di giovani marinai. I disegni di Beroth sono sempre molto puliti e nitidi e caratterizzati da linee molto spesse, sembra quasi di poter toccare i personaggi.

La seguente tavola proviene dalla ex collezione Charles L. Howard della Early Comic Art & Original Political Illustration, composta da quasi 800 illustrazioni. Charles L. Howard � stata una figura di spicco del settore ferroviario tra le due guerre. Gran parte della Collezione Howard, inclusa questa tavola (foto aggiuntiva del retro), fu esposta all'Art Institute of Chicago nel 1939 e mostrata in varie istituzioni educative prima del 1947. Queste opere sono giunte all'asta alcuni anni fa, da un discendente della famiglia.

Wonderfully clean and sharp looking strip showing a high quality of draftsmanship that exceeded the standard. It looks tidy and flawless while keeping within its own style.
