DescriptionNo retelling of my formative teenage years would be complete without mentioning Scott McDaniel's art on Nightwing. Over the course of his forty issues on the streets of Bludhaven, his dynamic sense of motion returned Dick Grayson to his acrobatic roots and defined the character for my generation. To my delight, earlier this month, Scott announced he was getting ready to sell more than 250 new-to-market Nightwing pages. My mind absolutely boggled at the idea of so much goodness being made available at one time, so I made sure to set several reminders for the drop. As always, when the moment came, the hardest part was picking which pages to buy… and choosing them quickly so I wouldn't lose out to other collectors. It's never fun racing for a page, and even less fun when you have to keep yourself from taking detours down nostalgia avenue. Overall though, the nostalgia factor made it a very enjoyable experience. But the best part was interacting with Scott himself, who lived up to his reputation as one of the nice guys in comics. In the midst of getting inundated with purchase requests at the drop, he was quick to respond to my multiple requests and gracious when I shared my love and appreciation for his work. However, he completely outdid himself by taking the time to include a thoughtfully written letter with my pages. Not only did he thank me for giving his art a welcome home, but I really liked what he said about showcasing Nightwing's wide variety of adventures. While there were quite a few action pages I would have loved to add to the collection, I made it a point to choose an array of high-flying moments and quieter ones. In some ways, this is my favorite of the bunch. Dick's relationships were a constant theme throughout Dixon's run on Nightwing. Especially his relationship with Barbara. Their will they/won't they dynamic popped up regularly, and I think I speak for all comic fans when I say we wanted the will and not the won't. Much of this issue is dedicated to the two of them answering that age old question. It's filled with moments of heart to heart connection as well as playful banter, with the latter best exemplified by this page. demonstrating how Scott is as good at the small stuff as he is with over the top action. The facial expressions here are absolutely fabulous, lending just the right touch of humor while making it clear how much these two enjoy each other's company. Social/Sharing |
