Description

Astro City started with several one-shot stories before embarking upon a mini-series in issues #4-9 of its second volume. The topic: Batman, or rather his Astro-analogue The Confessor, a figure of the night, skulking amongst the stone gargoyles adorning Grandenetti Cathedral. As he often did, Kurt Busiek told this tale from the perspective of a non-powered newcomer, in this case Confessor's new protégé Choir Boy.

This story sees the citizens of Astro City turning on their protectors as part of an alien invasion plot. This page combines two different threads pointing in that same direction. First, on the top half of the page, Confessor catches the criminal Gunslinger yet finds that he has frightened the common folk in the process. This plot line played out in a traditional fashion, with Choir Boy as witness and interlocutor for every scene.

On the bottom half of the page, the murder of a blonde has citizens demanding definitive action against the mystical suburb known as Shadow Hill. This B-plot was told entirely in summary and from a distance, with snapshots of scenes and moody scenic panoramas like those offered here.

It's awesome they show the mass hysteria in the frightened faces and the evaporating fog revealing that the fear has turned to hate.
