Description1942.01.12 “Charlie Mc Tokyo”By Ralph Lee (1906-1947) 14 x 22 in., ink on board This cartoon, from January 12, 1942, was published in the Portland Oregonian. Using a depiction of emperor Hirohito as Charlie McCarthy, the piece looks to insult the emperor and depict Japanese soldiers as puppets of Hirohito. It depicts the Soviet Japanese Neutrality Pact which was signed April 13, 1941. Just several months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The cartoon was published a few weeks after Pearl Harbor showing how the Japanese took advantage of Stalin fighting off the Nazis to attack the allies in China and the rest of southeast Asia.
