DescriptionI would have to say that Hulk Gray is my favorite series from Tim Sale and I waited far too long to pick up a page from that series in which I paid the price, literally and figuratively. No other artist captured that childishness and well as the pure brutalism of The Hulk as much as Tim did and if you read this series you know what a delight this battle with Iron Man is. Yep, the prices on this series have skyrocketed, but you made a great choice in filling the gap! Congrats - I loved this sequence a ton - tremendous visuals!

Sale does a great job of showing how early Iron Man is the white knight while Hulk is a mass of blobby black shadows and anger as the more troubled and complex character at the time.

A perfect nostalgic capture of early Marvel but through a unique modern lens, and entirely successful on both fronts (which is a rare thing to achieve). Also a great example of both Sale's brilliant wash work and his pen work. Bravo.

Tim's dramatic panels really pull you through the page. Great example. Better late than never!

While everyone has their personal favorite color book, Gray stands above the rest because it has the best story, IMHO. Tim felt that way as well.
The art, of course, is phenomenal, and this sequence is a highlight. What makes this page unique from the others in the sequence, however, is the moment of tenderness in that first panel. Here you have Hulk reaching out to Betty, struggling to give voice to what he feels and finally make a connection, only to be snatched away by his new mechanical nemesis.
For me, it's little moments like these that separate Jeph and Tim from the pack. Congrats on a real gem.

Sale made that original Iron Man clunky armor look so cool! Very nice page, big congrats Steve!

Gorgeous page, Steve. As others have pointed out, 'Gray' was the best of the excellent Sale/Loeb "color" books. It certainly featured my favorite artwork of any of the series, with backdrops and landscapes as wild and primal as the Hulk himself. (During my first visit to Arches National Park this last summer, I saw Hulk:Gray geography every time I turned my head. It was beautiful. This was two days after Mr. Sale's untimely passing, and it helped me process that, in a weird way...). This page is a beautiful "best of intentions" page, where a confused and angry Hulk - not knowing what is going on, but just wanting to be alone - runs into a guardian knight just trying to keep people safe and doing his best to make good decisions (but ultimately failing to make the situation better). Gray, indeed. Beautiful work by Tim. Sincere congrats, sir!
