DescriptionI’m still reeling over this amazing Christmas gift from a fantastic friend; a gorgeously rendered winter’s scene by the amazing Mitch Breitweiser. The page feels like a snowdrift itself, with layers upon layers (of ink, wash/marker, and paint) piled on top of one another to achieve a rich depth of field and a dramatic “weight” of the moment. I love the exposed rocky patches in panel one (too jagged and harsh to be so easily covered by a mere blanket of snow - even one thrown down by a storm of this intensity), as well as the stark, weatherbeaten houses in the background (they feel a bit like Sean Gordon Murphy houses to me). This setting just feels so -REAL-. I’ve never been to this place, but I look at this page and feel the sting of the wind on my face from climbing up this mountain… To that end, the storytelling here is just as wonderful and transportive as the visuals, cinematically conveying both the harsh landscape and the precious warmth escaping from the cabin’s open door in panel two (to say nothing of the -lack- of warmth radiating from the message’s recipient… Shame on you, Orson! That guy braved harsh environs and the unforgiving elements to bring you those ill tidings!). The composition of that third panel is fantastic, too (although flipped on the published page, taking the reader’s eye back towards Randall, rather than steering them towards the edge of the page needing to be turned); even though it is dripping with beautifully illustrated character and architectural detail, the viewer’s eye goes directly to the letter held in the carrier’s left hand (regardless of which direction it’s facing). Superb. I hear the wind howl when I look at this page, and hinges creaking open... It’s definitely a page that makes you pull your coat tighter around you while looking at it. I feel like thanks can’t help but fall short here, but thank you once again, MOST sincerely, John. Social/Sharing |

Glad you have that drink in hand, Orson, because your day is about to get worse. You know, those do look like SGM houses. It's something about the shading, I think. What a well-made page, where the atmospherics really do blow right off the panels. The wind-effect and snow haze are especially nice: I haven't read this one, but I really liked all the immortal iron fist stories. Especially in K'un-lun. And, your friend is a pretty cool dude. :) Congrats all around, Jason

Mitch's art shines in the inking. There is so much life in those brush strokes. He pushes contrast which adds definition and focus to panel two and the figure in panel three. Also from a squarely nerd perspective, Orson Randall is my favorite Iron Fist :)

Mitch’s pages in the ink and paint
Brush and line for dramatic weight
Snowy days are gone, Randall’s goin' home
My daddy, just a wrote me a letter
I don't care how much money I gotta spend
Got to get page, of this story again
Drinking days are gone, Paris is now home
My Daddy is dying said a letter
Well, he wrote me a letter
Said he couldn't live without me snow more
All Breitweiser, can't you see I got to get back
To my daddy once-a more
Any page, yeah

I concur, the setting feels so REAL. For me, this page is all about textures. The coats feel like coats, the building feels like a typically run down home in the middle of Khazakstan and I can feel the sting of the biting cold as the wind whips around. Yes, I mean FEEL. Sure, those things also LOOK like the things they're supposed to, but the textures created allow the viewer to believe they can FEEL those objects. Really great artistry on display here!

Happy holidays, Jason! Thanks for forgiving my little white lie when you asked if I snagged this one. I thought it would make the perfect surprise winter gift, considering the subject matter!

It's rare to see a page where it's the atmosphere of the page that makes it work. This page creates a time and place and brings it to life. The stunning layout and powerful inks by Mitch Breitweiser really let us feel the cold and the wind and the snow. It's fantastic!

I came for the page but stayed for the terrific analysis of why/how the page works. Wish we'd see more of that on CAF.
