Description

Offered here is the original Jeff Hawke daily H65777 by Sydney Jordan. This strip comes from the story 'The Woman Who Would Be King" which appeared in the Daily Express from 12 July 1977 to 7 Nov 1977 (strips H6490-h6590).

In this strip, super-science and the ancient world of the desert nomad meet as a weak mayday beacon signal takes Hawke to the desert where he finds a man in suspended animation speaking the word, "Hatshepsut", a female warrior who became pharaoh, a King of Egypt. As the story progresses, Hawke finds Hatshepsut also in suspended animation. She is inadvertently awoken and goes on a rampage. Ultimately, Hawke and his companions lure her back and replace her in suspended animation. Lots of nods to Egyptian folk lore. As a note, a young Brian Bolland and Paul Neary were both doing ghost work on the story... although I cannot tell who did what or if they did anything at all.

The original is rendered in pen, brush, and ink with zip-a-tone. It has an image area of 15 x 4.25" on a larger (16.5 x 5.5") piece of 4-ply artboard. The art was done 45 years ago but is in excellent shape; note that the word balloons were added during production and have discolored somewhat. The original was been signed by Sydney in the lower right; he has also put story notes on the verso.
