DescriptionThis is very likely (^^) my last post of 2022 so I thought I’d go for a nice one, also my first piece from Scott Hepburn.Scott is not an artist I follow systematically but I enjoy his art (and James Harren riff) whenever I read it (i.e. when he is paired with a writer I follow closely ^^). And I’m quite curious about his recent creator owned Minor Threats as well. And while I did not read the series this cover came from (and likely won’t), it really appealed to me. Art for art’s sakes! And that wasn’t an easy win as MY Drax came with a silly purple costume to tastily pop up against his green skin and also the mind of a 5 years old child. I didn’t care for him in the movies (nor did I care about the movies he was featured in) but I must admit the DnA penned Guardians of the Galaxy series which featured the movi-ed version of the character was so excellent, I began to tolerate and accept the new design of the character (I mean, people and characters change, so why go against the wave?). So what did I like about this cover you ask? Simply put, I LOVE impossible odds pieces. You know, that Crom warrior diving from a mountain top in a sea of enemies? Wolvie against 2000 Hand ninjas? Spidey against the Juggernaut? CapA standing chin high to Thanos? The likes. This one is a fantastic variation of the concept coupled with an insane INSANE sense of scale. I mean we have a badass and Hulk-light sized Drax, only armed with his tattoos and what seems like a toothpick of a knife against what seems like a city-sized Fin Fang Foom (or is that LOTR’s Sauron, actually?). Both seem like they could be saying (to each other): “Bring it on, bitch, I’m gonna CRUSH you like the tiny ass cockroach you are!” (you know, one word balloon, two tails ^^). Stylistically, I LOVE the contrast Scott went with here. You have a fairly regular Drax with few black masses and shadows, nearly all white except for the lines delineating his body, then the poisonous EYE with TONS of blacks, crosshatching, scales and veins all around, so much that it seems like it is nearly ALL BLACK. And between them, seemingly a sea of white open space to play on that yin and yang of a contrast. It’s simple and it’s brilliant in its simplicity (many artists would have been tempted to show more of FFF. All of him or parts of him to cover the white space. And the cover would not have been this effective). Only showing FFF’s eye and staging them so closely really enhances the sense of scale. To some extent, it reminds me of another cover I own which I love for the same reasons: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=859982 HNY 2023 and happy collecting to the CAF community 😉 (maybe I should read that book, right?) Yeah, the scale is the coolest part about this piece. Though I think it's also the combination of tiny Drax (relatively speaking, of course) essentially armed with a toothpick, which brings a nice bit of levity to the piece! All the best in health and happiness to you and the family, Fred, and Happy New Year!

You could cut the tension between them with a knife...to the eye!

So cool! Drax is not above playing dirty with eye violence and gore to put himslf on the line to get the job done no matter what.

Happy New Year, F M! And a great way to ring it in here! Scott's rendition of FFF in this run was SO cool, with all the texture he infused into the plates of his armor-like scales. I mean, it looks like Drax is staring up into the Eye of Sauron mounted in a skyscraper. And I have no idea who is going to blink first. Drax's brash confidence here ("I don't even need the bigger sword strapped across my back for this...") is charming and hilarious. Fantastic cover image, and a terrific way of adding a new artist to your incredible array of talent represented in your gallery! Great pick up, Fred - congrats!

Fantastic cover! Hepburn's art is full of character and pure-comic emotion.

"I said...have a happy new year. Now." I'm with you on those impossible odds pieces. I've fallen prey to a few in my collection, too. :) And that monster's detail just makes the piece. Even up that close, the difference in detail allows the eye to be a bit foreground and add depth. Super cool piece to end the year with. Happy New Year!

Definitely a fun cover! I got a similar one, from the same series. Just love the eye rendering there, as well as the scales around it. With Drax's stance and expression, this piece has got both an edgy AND humorous vibe, which you gotta dig! Congrats!

Whoa. If his eyeball is this big. Then can you imagine how big his (gulp) elbow is?
