Description

This page from Daredevil (April 1987) was published almost a full year before McFarlane's Amazing Spider-Man #298 debut (Mar 1998), and was also published in the same month as McFarlane's The Incredible Hulk #330 debut (April 1987).

The setting is "GIPPO'S COSTUMES" shop, where there are numerous recognizable characters on the page, including:
The Three Stooges (Moe, Larry, Curley)
Opus (from Berkeley Breathed’s “Bloom County” newspaper comic strip)
Frankenstein(?) (left of Spider-Man)
Gumby
Popeye the Sailer
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy
Fu Manchu(?) (above Hulk)
Howland Owl (from Walt Kelly's “Pogo”) -- thanks to Marcus Wai for the I.D.!

McFarlane’s “large eyes” have been suggested here, but the weblines match the more traditional pattern, very much the same way Spider-Man was drawn by Art Adams in Longshot #4 (p15 panel 1, Dec 1985). While Adams was obviously a HUGE influence on McFarlane, the inner corner of Spidey’s “eye” (or ‘medial canthus’, if you will) is already sporting McFarlane’s unique accent, which is not present in Art Adams Spider-Man. It is also mildly interesting to note that the Art Adams Web of Spider-Man Annual #2 (Sept 1986) also included The Three Stooges and Frankenstein on the splash page.

NOTE: The opposite page (DD 241, p7) contained drawings of US Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, as well as the back of Captain America’s head and the back of Batman’s head.

Such a fun early McFarlane page. I love seeing all the different masks/characters on the page. Thanks for sharing.

The owl is Howland Owl from Walt Kelly's Pogo.  I don't even think there's any need to push the debate, it's Todd McFarlane artwork and anyone would be proud to own it rather than not have it at all.

Thank you very much for the ID of Howland Owl!  I've updated the page's description.  Apologies to all for being unnecessarily pre-defensive.
