DescriptionThe Mystery of the Menacing Mask" is a landmark piece of Silver Age DC art. Not only an incredible art page by Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella, this issue, in particular, indicates a new direction for Batman.Despite Batman's immense popularity in the Forties and Fifties, the character's direction was all over the place and had strayed by the early Sixties. Batman had been fighting alien criminals, traveling to other planets, and teaming with interstellar cops in addition to fighting earthbound monsters such as Clayface. As a result of these offbeat stories, sales had been dropping for years, and Detective Comics, DC's flagship title, was actually in danger of being canceled. The title desperately needed a new direction and was turned over to famed DC editor Julius Schwartz, the man with the Silver Age touch. He brought in his top-flight art team of Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella to launch the revamped version of the Detective, which Schwartz dubbed the "New Look". Although simplistic, Infantino's streamlined version included a redesigned, distinctive circular bat chest emblem that became revolutionary. Social/Sharing |

Very cool Silver Age page. Robin very much looks like Bucky in the bottom panel in this one.

Awesome Silver Age Batman and Robin page! This story recasts the dynamic duo as true detectives, following a suspect to a mysterious house, then watching him through a window as he enters, then seaching the empty room but identifying a suspicious shelf in a closet that will, no doubt, open to reveal a hidden room. No super villain here, just an low life crook that the Dynamic Duo will outwit handily.
