DescriptionThe Secret Origin of Dr. OccultDoctor Occult, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, is an occult detective and private investigator and user of magic who specializes in cases involving the supernatural. Doctor Occult first appeared in 1935 around the Golden Age of Comic Books. He is the earliest recurring, originally featured fictional character created by DC Comics that is still currently used in the DC Universe. Nice big splash of one of DC's earliest heroes. I can't really say I know much about DR. Occult. I'm familiar with who he is and I remember him from the Books of Magic mini series that introduced Tim Hunter. I'm a big fan of DC Comics stable of heroes, when was I going to come across a big splash of such an obscure character, I couldn't pass it up. Howard Simpson's art is perfectly matched to the character and does a great job of evoking the comics of the early 1940's and 1950's. "The Secret Origin of DR. Occult" by writer Roy Thomas and artists Howard Simpson and Bob Lewis. Social/Sharing |

Larger than a cover image that brings a bit of Dick Tracy and a bit of Doctor Strange in design. The note on the side for the inker is telling as well with how to make him more broad shouldered heroic than a gaunt mystic.

Great looking splash and really cool to own one of a character that has existed since BEFORE Superman! As Marcus pointed out, the note to the inker on the left border is also a wonderful part of the production process of creating comics books. Fun stuff!

The Roy Thomas-penned Secret Origins stories were a wonderful window into the histories of DC's Golden Age greats. The art on those tales was very strong, with this being an absolutely fantastic example that captures a 1930s feel harkening back to the character's introduction. Stellar stuff!
