DescriptionD. Bruce Berry was an avid SF fan who did some illustration work for the Hamling pulps in the fifties; CAF members may know him best as one of Jack Kirby's inkers on Kamandi and OMAC. This one may have been done for a pulp or a fanzine, probably lost to time. It's a good reminder of what fine work some of the second stringers could produce. Like Gerard Quinn, Berry shows a professional grasp of fine line work. Despite a certain stiffness in the figure, this could easily pass muster as a work by Finlay himself. Social/Sharing |

Without knowing who did this, this is quite classical and elegant in its own right. It celebrates the sci-fi tropes of the golden age with labor intensive meticulous stippling for each element to achieve a silky smooth representation of our yearning to reach for the unobtainable in the stars and in her beauty.

Theres a beautiful little visual gag here. If you look at her left hand, its lit from below by the famous light type patterns that Finlay was so fond of using, but which he used for decorative purposes, rather than light sources.

Very cool! At his best, as he was here, Berry was quite good.
