DescriptionThe most powerful being in the universe, the Spectre, possessed by the evil Eclipso.Terrific splash by Tom Mandrake. The Spectre written by John Ostrander with art by Tom Mandrake was one of those books that was better than it was supposed to be. The story arc of Jim Corrigan from the very first issue to its satisfying conclusion (last issue) is on par with James Robinson's Starman series, I think. The exploration of justice, revenge, punishment, vengeance and redemption woven throughout the entire series makes it one of the best series from the 90's. John Ostrander, everything I've read from him has been great; Spectre, Suicide Squad (obviously), Martian Manhunter and Hawkworld. Tom Mandrake's art is phenomenal in this series, it's dark, spooky and fits the subject matter perfectly. The Spectre really is an amazing combination of the right writer and the right artist on the right character. For a series that ran 62 issues there isn't a lot of art out there. Good Spectre pages from the book are hard to find. Great image of the Spectre along with The Demon, Zatanna, Dr Fate and the Phantom Stranger. Social/Sharing |

Mandrake is such an amazing stylist! I've been a fan of his work ever since he was the regular artist on Batman back in the 1980's. I loved that stuff. I never read this series from the 90's, but in the last two years I've had a handful of people tell me it is absolutely GREAT, which of course makes me wish I had access to it all so I can try it! Anyway, an amazing splash page, dude. Congrats on the 19-12 Niners win!

Mandrake is best in this series where he can tackle the supernatural with the whirling energy that makes great use of his expressive brush lines.
