DescriptionNever thought in my life I would get to own a cover to a Mage storyline. I have been a fan since the series came out from Comico. Remember those days? Comico, First Comics, Warp, Aardvark-Vanaheim, etc. So many great characters came out at the time Cerebus, Elfquest, Nexus, the Rocketeer, etc. Modern classics in story and innovative art. This cover is not the hero in your face, it isn't the big action scene, it is a masterpiece of composition from the setting and scenery. The ominous trees shrouded in darkness dwarf the hero, Kevin Matchstick, and his daughter, Miranda. This is stunning in black and white, and the published cover is colored in hues of green. A very symbolic cover of the green world magic that Kevin is in search off. I appreciate the help of Jim Warden in getting me a scan of this cover. He reached out to Matt Wagner who supplied this scan. Matt said this was one of his favorite covers. It certainly is for my wife and I. Social/Sharing |

The central character lighting emanation into the trees is brilliant! Wonderful cover!

That's great how the lighting fades into the foreground path that they are walking towards.

Sublime cover, Ilia! Your description is perfect; the composition is phenomenal and it speaks to not only one of the central themes (probably -THE- central theme) of 'The Hero Denied', but that of life itself: the importance of family. When everything around is dark and closed in on all sides by (literal) wilderness, family will keep you safe. The simple act of holding onto the one you love (as literally or metaphorically as the joined hands of Kevin and Miranda here) will be enough to illuminate your way through what otherwise would be a hostile, unfriendly, or untraversable environment. Gorgeous piece, Ilia! Congrats again on this amazing add to your collection!
