I must confess I wasn�t that familiar with those Hanna Barbara super heroes outside of Rude�s Space Ghost one shot for Comico and their presence in the old Alex Toth artbooks. I never got to watch the animated series.

But those Toth designs were always very appealing and the DC series of 2017/2018 were excellent stuff with great art for the most part and great writing by the always great Jeff Parker.

This splash cost me more than some of the covers for the series by Rude but I had to get it. It is just sublime.

Not only does it feature Birdman and his eagle companion Avenger in their full winged glory but it also retells his origin as well as his transformation from Ray Randall under the influence of the power of the Sun God Ra.

The composition is busy but still crystal clear as always with Rude.

We get a glimpse of Ray teaching in the first segment, his conflict with Mentok/Mentor in the second, a very dynamic vertical transformation in the third (which I absolutely LOVE and find is superbly dynamic and powerful!) and his interaction with Dev and other Inter-Nation agents in the last one.

As lifelong fan of worldwide legends and mythologies, the Egyptian one was always quite fascinating and exotic. All the symbolism that Rude included in page make for a great composition and really ground the character in his own lore.

All the girls are cute and sexy without being comic book vulgar, another thing you can count when Rude draws them.

Every character on this page is infused with real life traits and mannerisms. Just look at Mentok in �panel� 1, Ray giving a lecture to those giggling girls, the intensity of his body language during his transformation and lastly, his interaction with the agents. This is great and thoughtful storytelling at work.

Let�s finally mention the very impressive display of technique here. Steve Rude is well known and respected for his many commissions. I have commissioned him myself several times to great results but to be frank, I find that some of them sometime look a bit rushed, with the inks or the makers a bit too visible for my taste. This is not the case here as everything looks so expertly polished. There is ink, crayons and pastels I believe on this page.

Lastly, the fact that storyteller supreme Alex Toth created this character, giving him a timeless and perfect chara-design is enormously pleasing to me. Steve Rude�s love and respect for Toth is well known and we discussed it at length when I met him. In fact, having spotted some Toth in his art led to a wonderful gift from him but more to that story later ;)

I too am a lifelong fan of Egyptian history and mythology. As a football fan, you can imagine my joy when a trio of brothers who were in college just a couple of years ago had names like Amon-Ra and Osiris, one of whom made it to the NFL and onto one of the teams I root for!

I've said it so many times before but it always bears repeating. Steve Rude is an artistic genius who should be revered by the masses today, rather than just by his peers and a small minority of art collectors. I also have no idea about the content on this page, but suffice it to say that this is a brilliant and astonishing piece of comic book art, with so many of the hallmarks that Rude is known for. One of my favourite pieces in your collection, congrats!

The board surface is so amazing. Rude's painterly style, that he plays up, is made that much more impressive.

WHOO! Birdman is obviously excited to get an invite to the birthday party, F M! Man, what a stunning piece, and your terrific write up really nails it: this is a superbly "finished" piece; a treasure of great composition, layout, and storytelling, benefiting from being built around a Toth character design at its core. Packed full, but not overly crowded, and one's eye finds something gorgeous to look at in every square centimeter. I love how Ray Randall's transformation is handled here, how he grows in the center of the page and the killer use of iconography to take it the final step and show that Mr. Rude is no slouch in the design department, either! :) Sublime piece, F M!
