Description

Stormwatch by Warren Ellis was huge for me (and still is). I’m a firm believer that the Authority was a game changer in comics at the time, one of the best and most significant series of its decade, as everybody was doing their version of it afterwards but some may forget that it all began with Stormwatch (which was less…advertised). I personally perceive Stormwatch volume 1, 2 and the Authority as a whole (or a trilogy if you will). Super Heroes high concept at their best! To those who consider that the 90s were horrible, just go read that series! 😉

Though he would achieve much higher artistic heights, a young Tom Raney was already producing great work on the series before it exploded (further) under Bryan Hitch’s art.

And while I own my share of great pages from the series by Raney, I was delighted to be able to add a proper cover from the vaunted run.

It features the very dangerous Jack Hawksmoor (what a great name btw!), a being who has been augmented to derive powers and be in tune with cities such as teleporting from and in them and to the point of not feeling well if not in contact with one. Raney is actually credited with co-creating the character with Ellis.

The composition is simple but everything is done to bring the attention to the character, from the white space above his head, the debris circling him from the swirling fumes raising from/leading to him (I really like how the bended pipe in the foreground and the fumes creates this “S” shape surrounding him by the way).

I love Hawksmoor’s position more than anything else, like a crouched hunter/tracker in a forest or jungle, hunting his prey, feeling the ground for signs. Except here, the jungle is a concrete one. You’ll note he is barefoot. His face exhibits the typical cockiness UK writers would attribute to their characters, a trademark (some would say template) Ellis’ writing hallmarks.

Though he would also be blessed with top notch inkers later on, Randy Elliott was a nice match for Raney early in their careers.

Very pleased with that one, a perfect match of (my late teenage years) nostalgia and quality.

This is the fifth day of my 2023 CAF birthday party.

Owning covers to series we loved reading is always such a thrill, so big kudos to you for achieving that with this piece. As you mentioned, I clearly remember when The Authority was being published, I saw it getting attention as one of the best series people should be reading and in fact that's how I first heard of the title. Then I asked some friends about it and they recommended I try it, but they also mentioned that the Stormwatch series that preceded it was also really good and that I should also consider reading that. But because it wasn't included in the articles I was reading as one of the series people SHOULD be reading, I figured it couldn't possibly be anywhere as good, otherwise it would've made these "must read" lists, right? So I never did read it.

But I did really enjoy Jack Hawksmoor, who is essentially the Avatar of Cities and who (by the way) I got to read about for the first time since The Authority when Ram V decided to put him into the recent The Swamp Thing series. Just a subplot for a couple of issues, but perhaps more reason for you to give that series a try, eventually.

Another beaut, F M.  It sounds like I need to pick up Stormwatch!  I enjoyed The Authority (of course) but I've never gone back as far as I should have, apparently!  Sounds like I need to rectify that...  I am in complete agreement about Jack Hawksmoor, though.  I love that character concept, and forget hyper-musculature: anyone willing to run around cities barefooted is a complete badass. :)  (Is it true that the character's original name was Jack Tetanus?  ;P ).  A great cover here, with a cool lighting source and great detail.  I love the smoke tendril to Jack's left, and how it was drawn to interact with the wooden pallet behind it.

(and the fifth part of my CAF birthday greeting to you...?  Why, that would be "Y", of course!!)
