Description

"Blood Is the Code!" by Bob Haney

This penultimate page winds up the story. Mr. Kubert uses a page-length side page of diving P-38s shooting down Admiral Yamamoto, who led the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Imperial Headquarters learns it has been duped. The next panels are an overhead shot of the camp commander's building as he expects a promotion, next a close-up of his shocked face when he reads Tokyo's telegraph of Yamamoto's demise, and a shot from above of him hanging his head as he's told the Unknown Soldier has escaped.

The camp commander commits hari-kari in the last page of the story--the original art for which I unfortunately do not have. The story concludes with final words from the Unknown Soldier and the classic DC war comics logo "Make War No More."

That veritcal panel makes you do a double take! What a bittersweet finale to the story. Like all great war stories, this compact tale teaches us the folly of war.
