DescriptionChris Bachalo, amirite? As is usually the case with Chris’s work, the more “out there” the narrative ask is, the more mind-bending the results are… and here’s another example of his unmistakable and flat-out crazy brand of gorgeous graphic storytelling. I mean, who draws a page like this… like -THIS-?This spread features a moment of triumph for our dear friend Goldballs, KO-ing a very Bachalo beastie with a barrage of, well, his balls. (It’s a unique challenge to write this description.) I love how page eight is knocked sideways, too, as though the mad flurry of golden projectiles has knocked it off its frame, like some sliding shower door that has slipped off its track. The angle also gives extra impact to the monster’s hard landing in panel 5. A fun and Puckish piece of prankish penciling, the big balls even cover the issue number and artist names at the top of page 8. (Along with his excellent inking, Al Vey chipped in some good sportsmanship, too, allowing his name to be almost completely -but hilariously not quite!- hidden in the upper right corner…) I’m always fascinated when Chris does the colors for issues he draws, too. Some really interesting choices on the published page. Social/Sharing |

Chris is one of those artists that can really over do the details. This however strikes a good balance and as such - just beautiful!

Fantastic DPS! Love Bachalo and it's both fun and interesting to see him being inked by someone other than Townsend. Vey does a great job here. The big bird is of course my favorite. Kind of reminds me of those giant bird things in the Pixar movie UP!

Hahaha, that big bird DOES remind me of Kevin from the Pixar movie "UP." What a delightful Bachalian two-page spread, congrats!

I didn't see that one coming. Fun stuff and challenging storytelling as always with Bachalo.
(My secret hidden desire is to be called Goldballs as well...in public, preferably ^^)

Apparently you not only like big balls, Jason, but also only white ones. You have very specific tastes. 😉
Guys, is this not essentially either a Golden or Jason Pearson influenced piece? That's what I immediately see, but I don't recall ever hearing Bachalo ever being referred to as a Golden influenced artist at any point in this career. But I admit, I never really followed his career, as most of it happened AFTER I stopped readin/collecting comics. Really great either way!

Bachalo is evidently influenced by Golden and always has been. He has gone on record stating that he was (one of) his main influences several times. Think of Golden early days when his style was more roundish (Micronauts) as well as his 90s period where his cover layouts were crazy challenging and his inking much sharper (even if Bachalo rarely inks himself). The Pearson vibe you get, especially in the inks, is probably coming from the Golden filiation.

Well I've upper-upper class art variety
Got Chris Bachalo art finally
And he always fills with mushrooms
The event is never small
The double pages say I've got
The goldest balls of all
I've got big balls
I've got big balls
They're such gold balls
And they're shiny gold balls
Fabio’s Gold Balls
Medina’s big balls
(But we've got the goldest balls of them all)
And my balls are always bouncing
My artroom’s always full
And everybody comes and comes again
Yes Al Vey ink’s on the best list
No one can ink it better
Everybody says I've got
Gold Balls on fire

Wow! What a stunning display of Chris Bachalo goodness! Fabulous DPS with tons of interesting details everywhere you look. I love all the effort Chris put into the big bird with his feathers so lovingly rendered. Fun layout too, with the right hand panels knocked sideways. Goldball's mutant balls floating right through the panels are an interesting graphic element. The DPS is beautifully complemented by Al Vey's superb inks. What a stunning pick-up, congrats!

"Balls of gold! Is my mutant power." Heck, if it's useful, you do you, Goldballs! This series was so fun. Lotsa old school nods and at the same time so much new X fun added. And the Bendis/Bachalo double b boy combo flat out worked. Just some creative guys going full tilt in a comic world (X!) that best welcomes it! See layout here combined with pure illustration. Mtwah! With the sweet Vey ink assist. Congrats, man!
