DescriptionRichard Bober's horrifically, jam-packed paperback book cover painting of "ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS: Stories to Be Read With the Lights On, Vol. II" was first published in April 1976 by Dell Publishing and then republished in October 1979 under the revised title: "ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS: "Breaking the Scream Barrier." Bober painted this meticulous horde of horror in oil & acrylic on stretched canvas and it is essentially the monster version of a "Where's Waldo" cover! So, can you distinguish all of the Creatures of the Night who are featured? (42" x 24") (Richard Bober: 8/14/1943 to 12/10/2022)Richard Bober studied at the Art Students League in the early 1970s and began a successful career in commercial art around the same time. He started as a freelance medical illustrator but soon turned to creating highly detailed, heavily embellished compositions in a romantic 19th-Century style that was superbly suited to mythological themes and literary fantasy. Bober paints the old-fashioned way using traditional techniques: multi-layers of oil paint and alkyd or acrylic glazes on fine linen canvas or masonite for visual effect and surface texture. Prior to Bober’s passing in 2022, he had been retired for many years from his commercial projects but continued to paint for his own enjoyment. Richard Bober’s renowned and award-winning career found him creating eye-catching, meticulous cover art for the major paperback publishers that included but were not limited to: Dell, Avon, Berkley, Bantam, Tor, and the New American Library (NAL) among others. . . including memorable early ones from the “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” series for Dell in the 1970s and mysteries & YA novels from the 1980s to 1990s. Bober has won many awards and honors (too numerous to list here) and was featured in Patrick & Jeannie Wilshire’s "Visions of Never: The Collection of Fantastic Art" book by Vanguard Publishing (2009). I was just talking to a group of friends last week about this book. I loved reading them as a young man growing up. and this is a spectacular cover with all the things that go bump in the night and hide in your closet and under your bed, meanwhile hitchcock just sits there eating his popcorn, I love that straight faced Dark humor that rain through his stories, movies and even his tv series.
