DescriptionThe third and final artist I asked for a convention drawing at the Swansea Comics and Gaming Convention, 2023 was Dylan Teague. He already had a backlog of requests and suggested I come back in an hour’s time but when I did so he had still not started on my request and he was just about to have his lunch. This proved fortuitous as I had originally asked for a Joker, as I had seen his rendition of Batman previously, but on reflection I thought it best to stick to the milieu he was more accustomed to – Judge Dredd and the 2000AD universe – so I changed my choice to everyone’s favourite distaff Judge: Judge Anderson. Boy, was I glad I made that decision. When I came back again after an hour I saw that DT had started my drawing but even so it took another 20-30 minutes before he completed the work, which is explained by him constantly switching coloured pens and drawing instruments and generally sweating over the piece. DT said that as he works mostly digitally nowadays – the switch accelerated by the amount of advertising work he is doing where the frequent need to make changes is much easier on a computer – it was a revitalising change for him to use traditional media. Anybody interested in his work should not dally in seeking a commission now before he does a “Brian Bolland” and shifts over to a solely digital platform. When DT turned over the drawing to me I could not help beaming from ear to ear; I could not wipe an ecstatic grin off my face for about half an hour. What a portrait! My only regret was not going whole-hog and opting for the torso or full body shot, although judging by the labour he was putting into the work he may have still been working on it as I write this. After he showed me the drawing he asked, “Is it alright?”. Don’t you love the British custom of self-deprecation?One thing I did notice was that when I asked for a photograph after the three artists had finished their drawings, two of the three suggested independently of having the photo taken with them holding the drawing they had just executed. (For the sake of uniformity, I asked the third to hold up the drawing for the snap I was going to take.) I always thought that this was something that the person who asked for the drawing requested, so that it would authenticate the drawing when it was time to sell it. Well, that will not be something I have any intention of doing. With these three drawings I have gone back to what Bill has remarked was the original remit of CAF: to share and disseminate convention drawings with the fan populace. I have not been to a comic convention for some time but I cannot recommend highly enough the Swansea Comics and Gaming Convention, 2023 which as of this writing has another day to go. Sure, most of it is given over to cosplay and gaming and the selling of wares unrelated to comics but the comic art professionals attending are conscientious and committed to the artform and this shows in the quality of work they have produced. If you are in the vicinity and are reading this on the day I am posting it then run, don’t walk, to make your way to the convention. My thanks again to the three artists I met on Saturday; you made my day. Social/Sharing |

Very nice how the sharp red pen was used. Anywhere that it got too distracting, he put an extra layer of marker to diffuse it as part of the red aura that surrounds her. Taken in as a whole, this is a stunning portrait with real personality staring back at us.

Thank you for your perceptive comment. I have subsequently seen that Warhol uses a similar technique with a sharp red line on some of his screenprints and you have now explained to me the purpose behind that.

Hi fella
Welcome back to the world of getting sketches in the UK. If you're back in the mood I'd suggest looking at the Lawless comic con taking place in Bristol next weekend. It's amazing. Really enjoyed your write-up and I too remember the days of free sketches but hey it's good to put some money their way. All the best

Thank you for your then-advance notice. Sadly I was unable to make that weekend but judging by limited reports I have heard and the sketches/drawings on CAF from that event the artists were out in full force for the convention and really outdid themselves. I hope that you managed to pick up some cool drawings from the meeting as you seem to have a good eye for pairing up homegrown talent with exactly the right character they should be drawing.
