DescriptionRed Hot Chili Peppers / Mary's Danish / Primus concert poster/pinArt by Frank Kozik Bill Graham - 1989 I never thought I'd have the chance to own an original piece by Kozik. In my eyes he's a legend in the concert poster world and helped influence an entire generation of artists and basically created a "house" style for poster art in the 90's and beyond in the rock and alternative worlds. This piece features a poster art legend creating a piece for the legendary The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA promoted by Bill Graham on September 15 and 16, 1989! Too add to the gravitas of the this piece, 1989 was an extremely pivotal time in the RHCP's story. In late 1988 John Frusciante and Chad Smith joined the band. Then in 1989 the band started writing their 4th album, Mother's Milk, which was released on August 16, 1989. It was a formative year for the band's next 30+ years. It's also cool to think that this was drawn super early in Kozik's poster career. I'll note you can still see some light pencils with the ink and some whiteout on this piece. I can't help but wonder if this poster was a tribute to the album cover (image above). The album was certified gold in March 1990, which was just a few months after this show. The album featured the band's cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground": Huge thank you to Yann for parting with this piece and for a wonderful transaction! UPDATE - March 3, 2024 - Heaven by Marc Jacobs has curated a KOZIK art show @ Heaven Gallery 336 N Fairfax, LA, CA 90036 on display for the month of March. The color version of this poster is 1 of 17 framed poster on display. Social/Sharing |

Is that a hot babe and a skull with flames on a RHCP poster? Nothing short of fantastic, George! Sincere congrats on getting a piece from Frank Kozik!

Kozik visualized rock culture in the 90s as this terrific image shows. Mary's Danish...now that's a blast from the past.

I missed the boat on Mary's Danish but it's been fun going back and listening to them. It's also fun to see a young Primus on the bottom of this bill all those years ago.

Dang, that must have been a great show.
I can only imageine! I've tried to search for any video from the shows with no luck, but still hoping someone has video from one of these nights that they put online in the future.

Wow! Now this is a true rarity! The fact that you got one from the year the band really began to explode on the scene and that it's for a concert at such a famed venue, is incredible. Big kudos to you, George!

Flaming Mad Skull and a topless babe pushes the limits of the 80's and could only be used in rebellious places with a dangerous edge.
