Description

The discovery of Katsuya Terada’s Zenbu and Cover girls artbooks had a huge impact on my teenage self.

But I clearly was not alone in that regard as any global artist worth his salt also took notice. Terada clearly remains one of Japan’s top illustrators and one of its most influential this side of Yoshitaka Amano and Katsuhiro Otomo. The former is a bit more difficult to take/lift inspiration from given the high level of the technicity and the sometime highly stylistically abstract aspect of his art, the later is primarily a mangaka whereas while Terada has dabbled in comics/manga, he has always remained an illustrator/character designer first.

The way he draws the eyes and to a lesser extent the mouths of his characters, especially his women, was a global game changer and influenced countless (generations of) artists worldwide (the impactful Blood the last vampire comes to mind).

The Monkey King is Terada’s super dark & violent take on the Journey to the West, the classic Chinese story which inspired TONS of other stories, movies, animation, mangas, one of the most well-known being Dragon Ball.

Terada’s version is more an exercise in style than a true manga but the level of quality is so high that nobody seems to mind. He released the first volume to only complete it years later with a second. I was quite happy with a tiny head sketch I had secured from one of his rare US appearances, but this is next level.

Understand that when I took notice of his genius, finding any published or unpublished Manga art was near impossible. That has very slightly changed over the years due to the effect of globalisation (to put it short) but it still remains a hard hustle as demand is huge while supply is not.

This is everything one would want from a Monkey King Terada sketch. He looks badass and full of rage. Terada sensei even included his magic cloud, his fav’ mean of transport, and his magic bo staff. The size is close to US standards (11 by 17), not a meagre shikishi board.

If I told my 18-20 self that I would someday own a full Katsuya Terada sketch, I would have likely made a lot of noise and/or fainted in no particular order of preference.

The character looks pretty cool! Do you know if this creation was inspired by Jon Carter, Warlor of Mars by any chance? Because that's what the image immediately conveys to me.

This illustration explodes with the Monkey King's ferocity and Terada's free flow of energy.  The combustible mix of Manga and European influences fills this with jagged details that work together to bring out the emotion of the subject and the viewer.

Wow, that's pretty!  My knowledge of manga artists is inexcusably lame, I'm ashamed to say, basically limited to what I glean from your posts, F M (oh, sure - I know Otomo and Koike, and a tiny bit of Amano), so I'm always grateful when you had more to your gallery.  This is wicked cool, full of detail and beautiful technique.  As Rubén pointed out, it has a real John Carter vibe to me, but it's an amazing piece and your excitement about it (and passion for it) is evident!  Sincere congrats on adding it to your collection (isn't it awesome to blow your 20-year-old self away?  That's really the only barometer we should be using in this hobby, right? :) )!

I'm not sure about the 20s barometer as I'm pretty sure I prefer my nowadays tastes? ;)
