Last week my girlfriend and I went to the Queens Comic Party, a small semi-regular comic show held in different locations in Queens and Brooklyn, NYC. I was able to find several issues of both All-Star Squadron and Infinity Inc. that I was looking for.

I like getting convention sketches, so normally I bring at least one sketchbook along with me to shows. I didn't this time, though, since I thought it was just going to be comic book dealers. I was surprised to find that there was one artist there: Rodney Ramos, who has worked on a whole bunch of different series over the past 35 years, including few issues of Justice Society of America.

I guess no one knew Ramos was going to be there, because he didn't have anyone asking him for sketches, His prices were really reasonable, so I decided this'd be a good time to get something from him. Since I didn't have a sketchbook, though, I looked to see if any of the dealers had blank sketch covers for sale. When I found one for The Flash #64, well, the choice of character seemed obvious.

I'd found a couple of Infinity Inc. issues penciled by Jerry Ordway at the show, and I gave one of them to Ramos for reference. He did a fantastic job sketching Jay Garrick, the original Flash of the Golden Age.

Very cool that Ramos adds age by facial structure, bags under the eyes, and the light crosshatch contours working in unison with the colors shading. Ramos is a legit talent with a great understanding of what makes for a compelling character portrait.
