Description

In this horror-soaked tale, Supergirl has been beaten senseless by the wizard Zond during a midnight black mass. As the sun rises, she comes to her senses and finds her costume shredded. She seeks help from the depowered version of Diana Prince, who summons the sorceress Morgana to their aid.

This page marks several turning points in Supergirl's history. As I note elsewhere, Supergirl had never before been so thoroughly trounced as she was in this first issue of Mike Sekowsky's tenure as her writer/penciller/editor. This reflects the evolving nature of American comic books as the Silver Age was turning Bronze. Superman Family editor Mort Weisinger retired, and DC split his responsibilities among several editors who wanted its heroes to seem more vulnerable and less outlandish.

Second, the definitive mutilation of her Silver Age costume becomes an ongoing plot point, as she adopts a series of reader-designed costumes in months to come, and becomes known for frequent costume changes throughout the rest of her career.

Third, Sekowsky engaged in Marvel-style tactics by cross-pollinating this book with the other title for which he was writer/penciler/editor at this time. Henry, the college student/amateur wizard who appears in just one panel here with little explanation, was the MacGuffin in Wonder Woman #186 several months earlier. He was turned into a frog, and Diana Prince contended with Morgana to reverse the curse upon him. When Supergirl calls Morgana "good" here, she means "powerful," not "helpful." Morgana is in fact obnoxious!

Supergirl uses her mind-reading power for the second time in this issue. Diana's incantation comes from the previous Wonder Woman story. "Retragrammaton" refers to "Tetragrammaton," the "four letters" spelling out the name of God in Hebrew: "YHWH." The words "Soter" and "Sabaoth" have their roots in Christian theology as well.

As typical for this issue, the faces and Supergirl insignia were partially whited out and redrawn in every instance except the long shot in panel two. In panel nine, despite the caption mentioning a "Pentagram," the women actually stand in a hexagon, missing at least one candle at that. There's substantial white-out around its periphery, so perhaps a pentagon was drawn but then changed to a shape less likely to upset parents?

Other random details: Diana is substantially taller than Kara. Diana wears a stylish micro-mini dress with a wide collar; her own book was full of current fashions. Diana has quite a large, stylish sofa in her apartment, which is above her boutique.

Very lovely dark mystery romance genre images.   The faces, fashions, and hair styles were a departure and made them contemporary.  Everything about them looked hot instead of wholesome.

Fun page with as you say a defintie Marvel tactic of crossover between titles. Another nice addition to your fine collection my friend.
