DescriptionIssue 18: "The Empire Strikes!" - wow, interesting title...This issue introduces us to the Wheel - a space station our heroes will be spending a fair amount of time at in this series starting here. This four panel page has some Storm Trooper action, a shot of the Wheel and finishes with a shot of General Grayshade watching the drama unfold. Thanks to Jeff for letting me be the caretaker of this one! Social/Sharing |

Chewbacca is not going to be happy with Stormtroopers crawling all over the Falcon in that first panel. We all know it may be registerd to Han, but that's Chewie's ride!

Infantino and Day were wheelin' and dealin'! They along with Archie Goodwin was definitely expanding the universe before our eyes every month. This is even before Cloud City was designed! The tight power rays in panel 3 create a stunning moiré pattern when you stare at it from afar. You might even be able to see the faint hidden outline of my action figure collection with.

I think modern STAR WARS owes a HUGE debt to Archie Goodwin. Hear me out on this one.
If you look at early comic efforts for, say, STAR TREK or BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, they often make for embarassing reading, because the writers were not well matched to the materiel (or perhaps they had poor guidance from the licensee.)
Not so with Star Wars. Archie Goodwin (and Roy Thomas before him) came firing out of the gate with STAR WARS stories which are still very much recognizable as 'part of that world.' They still feel like STAR WARS. They were writing the book on what STAR WARS was going to 'feel like' for decades to come.

Agree, we have seen from some streaming and sequal trilogy, not everyone can write Star Wars.
