DescriptionIf there's one name on the list of last June's Dutch Comic Con that convinced me to go, it was Lucas Werneck. As part of Marvel's newest class of "Stormbreakers" - the current Young Guns & tomorrow's legendary names, according to C.B. Cebulski & Marvel editorial -, it's clear that Lucas is very talented. His recent work has primarily focused on his great love in comics: the X-Men.Luckily, for us Spidey fans, he did do a few pages in the "Amazing Mary Jane" miniseries. Aside from my love for his work & specifically his composition on recent Stormbreaker covers at Marvel, that Spidey spin-off decided my commission idea. It just had to be a Mary Jane. I contacted him a few months ago. He wasn't sure if he'd sketch & he was still figuring stuff out, but it was clear that he wouldn't take proper commissions upfront. Time skip towards the Saturday morning of the show & I knew my mission. I was able to rush his table and get there first. Laughingly, he said: "Hey, you're the Mary Jane guy! Of course, I'll do a Mary Jane for YOU!". Success! In the back of my head, I had one concern, though. Lucas is primarily a digital artist so you never know how that would translate to pen & paper - or in this case, pencils, inks & marker. Then it was show time - around 3 pm in the afternoon, he was done with my piece & I went to pick it up. I almost teared up when I saw this one, I don't know why but I never expected a work of this size and quality. And no one else around me did - I got stopped five times before I could safely store it in my portfolio. Even C.B. Cebulski took a picture of this piece at the show. Additionally, Lucas could NOT have been nicer before, during & after picking up the piece. In the morning, we chatted a bit about his stay, his work. During, he mentioned how much he loved how it came out and my honest, surprised reaction. And after, when I passed his table throughout the day, he smiled & waved. The idea of MJ posing for a Polaroid picture isn't new. As Adam Hughes probably thought when he did his take on this idea with MJ, Gwen & Black Cat, the idea fits Peter so well. That's probably what Lucas thought too. The execution however is definitely spot on & unique. The hair is so mesmerizing, as is MJ's cute look. Those beautiful eyes. And to finish all that off, it's pretty darn big! This piece is 11x17, was done in pencils, inks & markers. The markers are actually a bit softer & some whiter looking areas in the scan have some very light marker over them, too, in real life. I love the Polaroid idea & it's probably one I'm going to start doing more & more. Even talked about it with Lucas, but unfortunately, no commissions for 2023. Social/Sharing |
