DescriptionFrom the pages of “THE MUTANT WE LEFT BEHIND”My first (and certainly not my last) page from the very talented hands of Joshua Cassara. We were at SDCC (2023) and went to a panel called Designing the X-Men. Joshua Cassara was on the panel and his enthusiasm for creating really imaginative and unique art for the world of X-Men was X-citing to say the least. It quickly reminded me of a talk I had with Dan T and that I should look into his art, since he had done the next story arc from the Children of the Vault, which I am a sucker for (I have a chunk of pages from Hickman/Asrar run, in the previous volume of X-Men). Timing is ideal and after the panel we made our way to see Joshua in person in Artist Alley to take a closer look at his art. It ended up being some of the best highlights for SDCC 2023, where we got to really connect with him and talk about his art, process and history over a few hours (split between multiple days). This page features some really fun action from Perro (one of the COTV) who was accidentally set free from Havok after a fight with his brother Cyclops. I really dig their brotherly love and fights, I am the youngest of four boys and I love my brothers but we definitely had lots of fights growing up (so I always enjoyed Alex and Scott’s unique relationship that has been very consistent through the years). I really love the last panel where we get a really great profile headshot of Cyclops giving a bit of a smirk to his brother Havok and telling him not to hold back. These little details of brotherly love/hate really make the characters come to life and Joshua really knows how to handle their looks subtly along with some great action poses. The storyline which continued the Hickman story of returning to the Vault to rescue Darwin, when he was left behind, but reveals that Laura Kinney (New Wolverine/X23) was kept alive and also left behind (becoming Talon after she returns, with another Laura already back from resurrection). It’s an awesome story that I am so very glad to get some pages for, even if mine are more focused on the activity outside the Vault. The story, mixed with our great X-perience in meeting Joshua Cassara and seeing his gorgeous art up close (lots of great details in his pencil art, which he inks his own pages, that gets a little lost by the final colored published page) are the perfect combination to make this X page a really special purchase and piece for our collection. Great page!!! I agree, the line work and inks are amazing- I personally think they're better than the colored versions! Enjoy the page! Great pick up!

Really cool page design by Cassara with the last image of Cyclops in an open space and only the border is on the bottom left corner for the body. The display of power in the second panel is balanced out by the last image about to let loose!

Alright, you added a Cassara! Everyone needs one IMO :) Expecially X fans. He can do everything and you can see a lot of that here. Great top to bottom storytelling, and love his lines mixed with his tones. I grow more and more a fan the more I see. Congrats, James!

I'm becoming a big fan of Cassara's work. Not just for the art, but he was really cool to chat with at a con.

Oh hey, I was at that panel at SDCC too! I actually ended up taking home a page from the FBCD book instead of this one because I wanted Josh Cassara's rendition of the 90s Cyclops costume. It's great this one ended up with you. I really liked how Jean wordlessly gets the visor back to Scott on this page, no verbal communication needed with those two. Josh was such a nice guy to talk to as well.
