Description

"Trench Warfare!" by Michael P. Palladino

Semper Fi is a Marvel comic that ran for only nine issues. This story is set in April 1918. American soldier have replaced war weary French troops in the trenches. Sgt. Whittier is trying to keep his men alive, particularly a soldier named Hubbard who almost gets himself killed, refuses to return to his position after a close call with a sniper bullet, and freezes when the Germans attack. In this page, the dead from a German gas attack angers Hubbard, who is now ready to fight.

I love the inking and details on this page - closeup of the dead hand in the third panel, the eyes in the gas mask in the fourth panel, and the lantern and hands in the bottom panel. The blacks for the figures in the first panel, the layers of gas in the third panel, cross-hatching for the gas in third panel, and the lighting on the commander's face as he lights his pipe in the last panel are nice touches.
